The best of Chronically Vintage's past Halloween posts

Humble sort that I try to be, I'm always a touch leery of using the word "best" in reference to my own work, but that descriptor does serve well in the context of a roundup post like this and so after some humming and hawing, I went with it.

Given that October 31st is my favourite holiday, hands (or would that be werewolf paws) down, I've certainly referenced All Hallows Eve more times than I could ever remember in the course of my blog posts, but today's roundup - a first actually in terms of gathering up and shining the spotlight on several of my own posts here - is one where the entries featured within have a strong emphasis on Halloween itself.

{That's right ghouls and boos, it's Halloween time again! What better way to embrace the season than with more than 25 of Chronically Vintage's festive posts from years past!}

This is my first entry for October 2015 and as seasonal/festive posts often serve folks best when they have time to read and enjoy and/or make or cook things featured in them, I couldn't think of a better way to kick off my favourite month of the year (which, for the record, I'm ridiculously giddy about the fact that it's here again) than highlighting some of the fun Halloween themed posts from the past 6.5 years of my blog's life.

Please bear in mind that in certain instances, products featured within these posts may no longer be available or that websites (or videos) may have been taken down.  In general however, their advice and suggestions still prove helpful and most of them are still as applicable today as when they they first appeared here.

Happy Halloween festivity planning, my dears!!!

Naturally, given my affinity for the last day of October, you can count on some new Halloween themed posts here as October continues and, hopefully, an outfit post at the start of November highlighting what I wore this year for the big night.

As usual, I'm keeping my costume plans under wraps, as I love to surprise everyone with my choice of festive garb each year (here's what Tony and I, as well as my mom and sister, sported for Halloween 2014).

There is a powerful energy in the air come October. The last embers of summer's heat mingle with the first icy winds of winter. The sky, trees, and even the ground itself is decked out in golden finery and an intrinsic desire to nest and savour the bounties of hearth, home, and harvest alike comes out in full force.

I hope that this post helps you to get even more in the spirit of the season and that this October proves to be a resplendently lovely month of all of us. Happy Halloween countdown, everybody!!!

  1. Fabulous post! I love Halloween! My goodness the delicious treats too. What is your favorite candy? I love Snickers bars. I'm a chocoholic! This wonderful time of year anything pumpkin is also a welcome treat. Happy October, thank you for this fun post!

    1. Hi lovely April, thank you very much for your great comment. Do caramel apples count as candy, because if so, they get my top billing! (Plus, I love that unlike so many other treats, I can still safely eat them even with my uber restricted medical diet, so long as I make them at home with safe ingredients.)

It really is a marvelous time of the the year, I agree, and I woke up with the biggest smile on my face today because October - aka, Halloween month - had arrived again! I'm going to be a giddy for the next 31 days straight! :)

Tons of hugs & joyful autumn wishes!

    1. Same here!!! One or two places around town still do it for Christmas, which is awesome, but I haven't seen much on the Halloween window painting front for years now.

I've got oodles of festive fall, Thanksgiving, and Halloween posts coming down the pipeline this month (and in November, too, for my US friends who celebrate their Thanksgiving Day then) and can hardly wait to share them with everyone here.

Have a marvelous, merry, joyful October, my friend!

  3. Oh, I can only wonder all the decor you must put up at home !
I usually just have spiderwebs and plastic spiders that we place at the main door.

    1. Our house in on the tiny side (it's a fairly narrow two-story condo with a basement) and there's only so much room to both display and store seasonal decor, but you're spot on, I do go all out with it and will try to take some snaps again (I did so back in 2012, if memory serves me right) of my festive decorations later this month.

Tons of hugs & happy start of October wishes,

    1. Thank you very much, dear Lisa. There will be plenty more coming down the pipeline this month, wrapping up, I would imagine, with a post about this year's Halloween costume very shortly after the big night occurs.

Wishing you a fun filled, fabulous October!

  5. Dear Jessica,

What a fun and amazing post! I love all the vintage Halloween photos and I have fond memories of Cracker Jack from days gone by. I believe they were just 5 cents when I was a little girl and there was always a prize inside of the box...yes, it was boxed, now they have it in a bag. I have not purchased any Cracker Jack since they changed the packaging from a box to a bag, but I have great memories of them and enjoyed them as a child. I do still purchase Fritos corn chips from time to time and love them. I also remember the molasses kisses at Halloween from my childhood!

I thoroughly enjoyed your post, as always, Jessica, and thank you so much for sharing all the links, memories and photos! Happy October to you. :)

    1. You're sincerely welcome, dear Linda. Many heartfelt thanks in turn for your wonderfully lovely comment and for sharing some of your own special Halloween memories with me. I still love Cracker Jack and though the price has gone up a great deal even since when I was a youngster, I still buy a box for a treat every now and then.

Wishing you a fabulous, fun filled October!

  6. I am actually getting excited about Halloween this year because for the first time in a long time I have a party to go to... And that means, costume! And in fact, I've planned my costume already - B and I will be attempting a couple's costume! Having ordered bits and pieces from the around the internet I'm getting very excited as they each turn up separately... I'm excited to see your spooky outfits too, Jessica! I love your post here with the vintage Halloween costumes; what a fun idea :) x

    1. How splendidly exciting!!! I'm thrilled for you and B, and hope that you have the merriest of times at the party!!! I've been gently trying to remind Tony to pick out a costume for about two months now, but he hasn't yet and we're into October already. Yikes!!! Fingers crossed he can find something he likes soon, as I really do adore Halloween all the more when he dresses up, too.

Tons of hugs & happy countdown to October 31st wishes!

    1. I'm with you there entirely!!! I adore the festive winter season, too, and get really jazzed up about it as well, but nothing sets my heart alight and takes my happiness levels on the holiday front to the same level that October and Halloween do.

      Wishing you a stellar October!

  8. I loved this post, dear Jessica, I love Halloween! My first costume was a fairy (when I was a child and could remember), and I had so much fun! Then later a cat, a gypsy twice, and I loved every costume so much! This is such an inspirational post! I love Halloween! I have just seen you and Tony last year and your mom and sister - all so inspired! Britney Spears, I never saw it! I loved your costume, really very Halloween-like! Red and black are always winners! I am so curious to see what you will wear for this year''s party!

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Denise. Aww, your first costume sounds really darling! I'm planning a post for later this month with old family photos of me as a child in some of my earliest costumes (following on the heels of my similar birthday post from this past July, which was very well received by my readers, some of whom asked to see more snaps of me as a child) and am so excited to share these special memories with everyone here.

Did my sister knock it out of the ballpark with her Brittany Spears costume? (The cardigan she wore was borrowed from my closet - one of the perks of having more than 40 cardis is that I can usually provide one in any colour, when needed for someone else's outfit or in this case, costume :)) I can't wait to see what she is going to wear this year. We all tend to keep our costumes hush-hush in my family and then surprise one another on the big day (or right around it).

Wishing you a fabulous, fun filled October, dear lady!

  12. September has been a roller coaster month for us. Halfway thru the month a friends son took his life and then less week ago we welcomed an exchange student from Brazil into our home. She's here till January and super excited about Halloween. So we welcomed a chilly October 1st with open arms, pumpkins and costume finding!

What a treat this was, no trick at all. ;) I've spent a long time enjoying all this, and the Flickr Favourites, The Hollywood Starlets, Hey it's OK and the Costumes and Clothes were my absolute favourites. I wish you would make a new round of Costumes and Clothes including accessories which you know I madly love. Thanks for bringing this best of list. XOXO for another Halloween fan :)

    1. Hi lovely Sanne, thank you very much for your great comment. I really appreciate that suggestion. It's a bit late in the month for that now for a costume post (in terms of researching and writing the post, I mean, and also for folks to have enough time to buy things for their costumes), but I will put it on the docket for next October and try to gather good ideas/products to include between then and now.

I hope that you're having an awesome October! The weather here this weekend was just perfect. As lovely as fall can be - perfect for the Thanksgiving holiday and simply to savour in general.

Huge hugs my fellow Halloween fan,
      ♥ Jessica
