Vintage Deal of the Day: November 4, 2009

{Everything old is new again! This refined yet playfully fun cropped, double breasted jacket looks as though it could have come from the front windows of a dozen trendy clothing stores this season, yet hails back to the golden years of the fifties. Fitting up to a 37 inch bust and a 31 inch waist, this versatile topper would look marvelous over everything from high-waisted pencil skirts to wiggle dresses, and would likely see you through many more autumns to come. 1950s cropped ladies jacket, $34.00 (US), from etsy seller Second Wind Vintage.}

Isn’t it wonderful how trends so often work in circles? Sure there are scads of styles I hope never see the light of day again (sadly most of them – like acid wash jeans and mammoth shoulder pads – already have), but there are others that I would jump through hoops to have return. I keep holding out hope that among about a million other pieces, full skirts, saddle shoes, and beautiful jumper dresses (also with full or dirndl style skirts) will swing back into vogue, but I’m not holding my breath.

Fashion seems to have much more of a love affair with the 80s right now than with the 40s or 50s. Still it’s fun to daydream about suddenly being able to find affordable, well constructed modern versions of our favourite vintage styles. What sort of pieces from yesteryear would you love see reappear and become readily available once more?

  1. Such a cute lil jacket. There are tons of items I would love to have readily accessible but then again I love the thrill of the hunt so maybe I wouldnt like that. But any who, pencil skirts that do not hit at the knee or above the knee but below the knee and sit at the natural waist.

  2. Wow, this cropped jacket is so great! I'm not a fan of the 80s influence items that are in stlye lately either. It would be so nice if the 40s and 50s began to influence everyday style again wouldn't it. As nice and practical as jeans are I do miss the more ladylike fashion of those eras and wish they were in fashion so they could be worn without eliciting an stares, etc. ;)

  3. That jacket is just gorgeous, Jessica! My daughter would love that--she has long red hair and loves to NOT dress like everyone else--loves creating her own style....hmmmm, going to have to save up my pennies!

    You find the neatest things! I'm with you on wishing for some of the good oldies--maybe someday.....!

  4. There is not much I love more than a good jacket - except perhaps a great purse....

    This is a great piece - plus the fabric is a sell, because anything resembling plaid, houndstooth, or argyle is an instant fave for me!

  8. Hi Sweets,

    What a lovely jacket! Let us all pray that acid wash jeans and huge shoulder pads NEVER come back again! I would love to see dresses like Lucy wore on her show come back, such a flattering style for all body types!

    Love and hugs to you sweet friend!

  10. It definitely looks like a lot of styles, etc. from the 80's are coming back. Even much of the music out there today has an 80's vibe to it. Makes me remember that as a young teen I loved to dress like Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) from Miami Vice. All of us boys had school thought he was so cool.

  13. This jacket is too fun. I was really hoping that Mad Men would usher in a 50s/60s renaissance but we went 80s instead for some reason...*crying* lol

  16. So pretty! I couldn't believe when "strong shoulders" was listed as a top trend for Fall! I thought, have you all looked at photos from the 80s? Whyever would you choose that? Crazy. I would love for gypsy skirts to come back in!
