Earlier this summer, on a very rainy day, Tony and I stopped by to visit my sister in Kelowna for a little while. We didn't know in advance that her boyfriend (the two live together) was quite ill, but when we found out we opted not to pop into their apartment (lest either or us should catch what he had), instead we visited with my sis for a few minutes in the very, very dimly lighted - but chicly decorated - lobby of her apartment.
We'd hoped to get in a proper photo shoot that day, but the rain ruled that out in an outdoor environment and then when we didn't hang out in my sister's place, we lost that setting, too. Not to be detoured though, Tony grabbed a few quick iPhone photos of me, which, given the massive lack of light, still managed to turn out alright. I'm very glad they did, as this adorable a-line skirt with its darling watermelon pocket is one I've been eager to share with all of you since the moment I got it several months ago.
I'm sure you'll see it again in future warm weather outfit posts, but as we're heading in fall and winter pretty soon, in case it doesn't get worn again this year, I thought I better post these pics now, two days shy of the end of the season.
As we were making our back out to the car, I spotted a sweet little snail on a fence and asked Tony if I could borrow his phone to take a quick photo of it. One doesn't encounter all that many snails (especially if you don't have a garden) in this part of the province (unlike in the Lower Mainland, where snails and slugs alike often abound), so - as a lifelong fan of snails - when I do see one here, it's cause for momentary celebration.
On a different note, though we're not been able to get to very many of them this season and I've only unearthed a tiny handful of vintage pieces over the course of the summer at the ones we did visit, as many of you have expressed an interest in seeing a "best of the summer" yard sale find post (akin to my best of the spring one from last June), I plan on putting together one in the near future.
We're having particularly lovely weather this September and as a result, yard sale season is still going relatively strong. In years past I've seen it stretch into October, and I'm hoping such will be the case in 2012, too, as it may mean that (assuming I'm feeling well enough to hit them up) that there are still a few more weekends this year in which to potentially find some wonderful old school pieces.
When it finally looks like the locals have packed it in for the season (quite literally) and there aren't likely to be more yard sales this year, a "best vintage finds of the summer" post will appear here. I really appreciate the enthusiasm that guys you had for the spring one and am super excited to share my summer finds with you, too, even if their numbers pale in comparison to the especially good spring garage sale run we had.
So while it will likely soon be time to wave good bye to watermelon skirts, sizzling rain storms (and the cute little snails they bring out), and yard sales, I'm not too blue about the fact that summer is wrapping up. Despite being very ill for August and much of September, this was still, bar none, one of the best - and happiest - summers I've experienced as an adult and I'm extremely grateful for that.
The memories and smiles gleaned from this season will stay with me for the rest of my life, and - I truly hope - stand to indicate how future summers may be often be from here on out now that we're in beautiful British Columbia.
I love the way your posts just ooze positivity, so inspirational. The first picture in this post is so atmospheric- you almost look like you are on a secret assignation! x
ReplyDeleteThank you deeply, Janine, that is really one of the nicest things anyone has said to me regarding my blogging before. I always try to be a glass half full kind of gal, and so it means a lot to me to know you picked up on that.

That watermelon skirt is so sweet! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my that skirt is darling! I love skirts with cute designs on them like that, whether it be watermelons, different kinds of animals, other fruits, polka dots, etc. It just adds a bit of fun to the outfit. And wow! I haven't seen a snail in so long! Glad that you snatched a photo of it :) Hope your last couple days of summer are bright and sunny!
ReplyDeleteAdios,
Jessie <3
That skirt is just too sweet! What fun detail. It has made me long for some watermelon though!
ReplyDeleteThe snail looks very nice, and innocent, it is just a shame they eat so much.
OMG! I *love*that skirt!!! SOOO cute! And you've accessorized perfectly! :)
ReplyDeleteLisa.
Love the watermelon pockets! Very cute. Snails gross me out. They're all slimy and sticky. It's the same way around here. Once the weather starts turning cold, there are no garage sales to be found anywhere. Not that I blame then. When it gets up to 35 degree F outside I wouldn't want to sit in that either.
ReplyDeleteThe skirt is to die for! Super cute! And happy fall whoaaaa yeah its here!!!! hehe xox
ReplyDeleteLove, love, LOVE that bag! It's adorable!
ReplyDeleteAnd the skirt is pretty, too...
Thanks for including the picture of the snail: you're right, he sure is cute!

ReplyDeleteThis is without a doubt the cutest skirt ever! I love the way you styled it with the colours of the watermelon, so pretty! :)
ReplyDeleteI only got to a few yard sales this summer and boy do I miss it! I'm hoping that next year I won't be so busy and can yard sale until my hearts content.
ReplyDeleteYou look lovely as ever! Love the watermelon skirt.
i adore the mix of colours so much ... the skirt is one of my favs out of your lovely collection. i love watermelons. :)

Oh my! What a fun watermelon outfit and the lucky find of a little garden snail must have made your day! It also looks like you have some room in your bag for some special yard sale treasures!
ReplyDeleteOooh! Love that skirt! The watermelon is such a cute accent, and the colors you wore on top compliment it nicely. :)
ReplyDeletelove it . That skirt is too adorable. :)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it! The watermelon detail is the cuttest thing in the world!
ReplyDeleteI'm a fruit-in-fashion-addicted and couldn't help but fainting with yhis post!!!
I'm super addicted to fruit fashion, too, and am trying to expand the very small produce (:D) section of my wardrobe. I recently won a cute vintage strawberry print sundress on eBay. It hasn't arrived yet, and the weather will probably be a bit chilly to wear it when it does, but assuming it fits, I'm really looking forward to sporting it as soon as the warm days of spring return next year (and who knows, by then I might have found some other fruit themed vintage pieces, too).

I love your skirt. It's pretty and kind of refreshing. :) And your pearl necklace goes so well with your entire outfit! Love your hair flower too! They definitely become you.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that you have been ill, and I hope that you feel as best as possible. :( *hugs!!*. Your watermelon skirt is absolutely darling!! :D You look absolutely gorgeous as usual :D.
ReplyDeleteEeee that snail!! :D So cute!
Wow, love the snail. I don't think I have ever seen a real snail like that in the wild.
ReplyDeleteThe first years of my life were spent on British Columbia's west coast, where snails and slugs abound with all the rain in the part of the province, but snails do certainly become a whole lot fewer and further apart when you venture away from that area. This little cutie was the first I've seen since moving back to B.C. several months ago. Hope you're able to see a live snail of your own one day, dear gal.

I'm sorry that your visit was detoured by illness... but you looked stunning anyway. That watermelon pocket is the most darling thing! I'm already dreaming up plans for a novelty print sundress for next summer featuring fruit-shaped pockets.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, sweet Frances. I adore the watermelon pocket, too, it perks up an otherwise cute, but fairly plain, beige skirt so fabulously! It was my sister's BF who was ill (strep throat) that day, and as thankfully, we didn't pop into their apartment, Tony and I (who are both very prone to catching bugs) remained unscathed (amazingly!).

Cheerful Friday morning greetings, wonderful ladies, thank you all very much for your lovely comments - they've been bringing uplifting smile after uplifting smile my way for sure. :)
ReplyDeleteWishing you all an amazing last day of summer!!!

That is such an adorable skirt! So perfect for summer. It's one of those pieces that feels like when you tuck it away and forget about it for the next few seasons, you'll be really tickled to see it come next summer. :) That reminds me, I really need to think about packing away some summer things so I can focus on fall!
ReplyDeleteHello again,

took me a little while to notice the watermelon, and when I saw it, I fell in love with the skirt! For me, summer is getting closer and closer, and I currently have two weeks of sunny spring holidays up in a warmer state of australia (queensland if you've heard of it). looking forward to some beach and some vitamin d after months of hibernation. :D
