There is a certain wonderful beauty to the days that fall right before the seasons change hands, rolling from one well defined chapter of the year into the next. Elements of the first clinging on for dear life, while signs of the second come barrelling into town with the energy and enthusiasm of a chipper young puppy (like the ultra darling labs pictured above!).

At this very moment we stand on the crest of autumn, my very favourite time of the year, yet are also getting ready to wave good-bye to summer, another season that I rather adore.

As with so many things in life, the age old expression that all good things must come to an end rings true for each quarter of the year, too. So while this leap from sun drenched summer to enchantingly colourful fall can bring a subtle sense of melancholy with it (assuming you're a fan of both seasons), there is also a sweet fondness to the period as well.

We can reminisce about the high points of summer, plan for its return next June, and at the same time begin eagerly diving head first into the abundant array of reasons why autumn is a joy for all five of the senses.

Today's Flickr images speak to these days of early and mid September, as fall gets ever closer, while still embracing some of summer's best points for the short time longer that they're here, as the endearing loveliness of these magical middle ground days surrounds us and the world gets ready to hop back into autumn once more.

  1. I remember having to wear a bathing cap in school swimming lessons, but none of us ever looked as elegant as the woman in the first picture!

  4. I couldn't agree more! Summer and Fall are my favourite seasons and this time of year always makes me melancholy. I find myself brooding and thinking about the past this time of year.

    1. As do I, sweet gal! Garage sale season this year was definitely a boon in this regard for me, but there still much vintage decor needed indeed (all the more reason I'll be counting down the seasons until garage saling kicks off again in the spring).

i´m looking forward to excessive hikingtours, in summer it´s mostly to hot. but in the bright, clear air of autumn it´s so much fun for me. in knickerbockers and a checked blouse. juhu!

    1. Knickerbockers are marvelous! I don't own any myself, but you're the second person I know who's brought them up lately, so perhaps that's a sign I should look into adding some to my wardrobe one of these days.

  7. LOVE those puppies! They're so precious. I think the yellow dress is equally precious. I love those innocent youthful dresses. Probably because I'm still a child deep inside. :-)

    1. Awww, I completely agree with both points. I'm young at heart, too, and doubt I'ever stop loving girly, innocent frocks or fashions in general (and why should we?!).

  8. It's Spring in South Australia a season I usually enjoy along with our Autumn (Fall). Unfortunately for Allergy sufferers Spring heralds the start of the Allergy season which I could do without.

    1. Indeed - that is one of the least glamorous sides to spring and autumn. I'm sorry that allergy season hits you hard, dear lady, and truly hope that you'll be able to ride out this spring as unscathed as possible.

  11. That clock is amazing!

I'm feeling very similar, waiting on the seasons to change. I love that in a few weeks, I'll get to rotate my closet and rediscover some of my favourite autumn/winter items!

    Cheers!

Many sweet thanks to each of your for your wonderful comments. That clock is such a gem, too - I wish I'd found it in real life, not just on Flickr. Who knows, perhaps one day! :)

  14. Autumn is my second favourite season after spring. I really don't do well in heat so I think that is why I like these two seasons you get lovely sunny days but with a delicious chill in the air.

  15. Love all those pics, especially the very first one. All the bright, happy yellow. I'll look back at this post often, i think, to remind myself of summer once the gray skies of winter have arrived. :) Great post as always, Jessica!

  16. Lovely pictures! I love autumn too, especially the fresh air and the wonderful colours. And I don't mind the rainy and windy days, they're perfect for cuddling up on the sofa with a cup of tea.

Hope you're having a good day!
