A swirling, glorious garden atop my head, this hat is the kind of topper that steals the shows, in the best kind of way and I adore having a few hats with such sublime magnetism in my wardrobe. This particular beauty came by way of a stellar online seller who specializes specifically in vintage hats: Blue Rose Vintage.
As I mentioned in Saturday's post, the splendidly nice folks at Blue Rose Vintage contacted me earlier in the summer and asked if I'd be interested selecting one of these vintage chapeaus to feature on my blog. I was touched and thrilled that they were interested in working together, and couldn't say yes quickly enough. I selected the topper that I did because I'm still trying to actively up the amount of green in my wardrobe, but there were many other contenders in the running for my selection as well.
It's scarcely a secret that I love and frequently wear vintage hats (a topic that I really delved into when interviewed by Kathleen Lisson from That's a Pretty Hat last year about my passion for collecting and wearing hats). They've appeared numerous times in my vintage outfit posts here, and are a favourite component of many of the looks I've put together in posts such as those in the Vintage Fashionista Friday series.
A hat is both a work of art and a catalyst for emotion and individuality. It can be sweet and simple, wildly bold, quirky, reserved, sophisticated, playful, enigmatic, daring, enchanting, cute, dramatic, or just about anything else one can possibly imagine, depending on its design, how its styled in the scope of an ensemble, and the person sporting it in the first place.
Sometimes when I post photos of myself wearing a hat, or discuss the topic of hats here on my blog, I receive comments in which people say that they like/love hats, but are wary of trying to wear one themselves. I get that, believe me I do.
In today's day and age, hats are not the fashion mainstay and integral element of an outfit that they had historically been for hundreds of years. A lot of people who were born from 1960 onward, and especially those born in the 80s or even more recently, may have had little (if any) experience wearing a fashionable hat before and it can be intimidating to picture yourself walking down the street in a beautiful hat when no one else around you in wearing one these days.
I believe firmly in wearing what you love however, no matter if others are doing it to or not, and highly encourage anyone with an interest in hats to try one out. It doesn't have to overly fanciful by any means. Pick a classic vintage hat style, such a beret, fedora, tilt or platter hat, in a neutral hue and wear it with one of your absolute favourite outfits, that you already feel confident in. This way you'll be more inclined to not feel as self-conscious while bopping around town, your workplace, school, wherever you may find yourself in your lovely topper.
Chances are, the more you wear hats, the more you will come to adore and feel comfortable wearing them. Believe me when I say that vintage hats are like potato chips, it's exceedingly hard to stop at just one!
Many of us in the vintage world already know this point well however, and find our shelves, walls, and closets teaming with a bevy of old school chapeaus, which we gleefully don at every turn.
This is the camp I'd place myself squarely into, and as such I truly loved getting opportunity to select a hat from Blue Rose Vintage, an online boutique shop that began life offering all kinds of vintage fashion offerings two years ago, but quickly developed into a specialized seller of quite simply, and wonderfully, nothing but fabulous vintage hats (like the examples, all from Blue Rose Vintage, peppered throughout this post).
Their offerings span a wide range of decades (think 1900s - 1970s), depending on the current listings, are reasonably priced in today's market, expertly curated and photographed, and are made up of an inventory that's updated on a daily basis all year round, meaning you could potentially find a new vintage treasure for yourself every time you visited Blue Rose's elegantly lovely website.
Today I'm delighted to be teaming up with Blue Rose Vintage to bring one lucky reader the chance to win any hat they'd like from this awesome vintage hat seller's inventory.
Please note that that the winner will select the hat they want to receive once the contest has wrapped up and the winning name has been drawn, simply because of the revolving nature of Blue Rose's offerings.

A vintage hat is truly is a special element of one's outfit, whether you wear yesteryear styles or are more of a modern style maven, and it's wonderful that we have specialized online boutiques like Blue Rose Vintage available to us 24/7 to shop for classic, beautiful vintage hats (especially if, like me, you happen to live somewhere with exceedingly few vintage shops in your area).
I know that I'm going to treasure my green 1940s floral hat for many years to come and hope that the lucky winner will adore the hat they select every bit as much.
Thank you very much to Blue Rose Vintage for this marvelous giveaway, and to all those who enter for the chance to win any hat they'd like from Blue Rose's gorgeous selection of vintage toppers. Best of luck to everyone!

I love wearing vintage hats because they are so much more original than hats you can find in stores today. They help me express my personality, my mood, and even convey a certain look of an era that I am going for, without looking all out 1940's, etc. I also like being able to carry on the (now rarely done) tradition of wearing a hat when you leave the house. It just seems so ladylike, and feminine. I'll tell you what I don't like about wearing hats, as much as I love 'em: Hat hair! ;)

Now this is a competition I will actually go to the effort of entering. Because....HATS!!!
ReplyDeleteI have loved hats ever since I was a little girl and there is hardly a picture surviving of me that doesn't have me in a hat (until I hit my teens and became worried what people would think...so I moved to headbands of all shapes and sizes).
But vintage hats...oh my. They are just divine. You can imagine they have been sitting atop heads during glamorous events and weddings. I love imagining the women who wore them (and then so lovingly stored them), the craftsmanship and of course the originality. It is unlikely you will walk down the street and meet someone wearing a hat at all, let alone the same vintage one as you.
For me they add that little bit of ommphh to an outfit. They make me feel glamorous and every single time I wear a hat out, I get compliments.
Now I am studying millinery as so many of the beautiful vintage hats are becoming more fragile. I want to be able to fix them up using traditional techniques. Others in my class are making modern, futuristic hats and I am studying old photos and trying to replicate them.
Now will bribery work? I could send you some vegemite?!?!?

I do so love that green hat on you. I'm not sure that I have time to enter this competition though, and also would hate to make someone post a hat to me all the way to England, but I shall see what time I have. I love that young people are wearing hats again, we wore them all the time in the 60s. And these hats are divine!!!!!!! Minerva x

I love vintage hats because they tell a story-- weddings, funerals, church, a day out shopping on Main Street...
ReplyDeleteI don't wear them often enough, but I love that in vintage hats you can completely transform both an outfit, your attitude, and that they make you feel effortlessly glamorous more than any other vintage item you can wear. I love just looking at them, and marvel how everyone had such pieces of art available to them for daily wear. Thank you so much for the opportunity to win a vintage hat!

ReplyDeleteWhy WOULDN'T I love them? :D
I didn't wear hats besides my cowboy hat until I won a vintage giveaway for an adorable 1940s style capette. And I'm hooked! I always had the impression that I couldn't wear hats, that they made me look awful, but now that I've found some styles that don't, I love them.

I just love the 50s blue floral hat! I don't have a lot of hats with flowers and I think that one would be tame enough to get me used to wearing more floral hats. It's so pretty but not too overwhelming.
ReplyDeleteHi lady! I know this message might be a bit random as it has nothing to do with your recent post. But I'm absolutely in love with the show called Call the Midwife and I'm just wanting to know if any one else watches this show?
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely the best show, well besides Bomb Girls :)
talk soon
Lindsey!!:)
Hello lovely Lindsey, I've caught a couple (I think about 2.5 episodes) so far, and thoroughly enjoyed them. I tend to keep odd hours due to my health (I don't have a set sleep pattern), so I don't always catch shows as they air, which can make following current series tricky (unless they're online or on Netflix.ca, too) at times, but as it's one of the very few current series set in the mid-twentieth century, I will definitely keep trying to see more (I also really want to read the books that the show is based on).
ReplyDeleteThank you for your question - have a beautiful Wednesday!
♥ Jessica
Oh I just love the show! I finished season two and I'm also on the second book. It's just a fantastic series. If you get the chance check out Bomb Girls. It's a Canadian show based on women in World War II in Ontario! I absolutely love it too.
DeleteHope you enjoyed your trip to Calgary and it wasn't too much on your health :)
talk soon
Lindsey!!:)
Bomb Girls rocks, I completely agree. I was over-the-moon happy when Canada started producing a period series set in WW2 and have caught considerably more of them than I have (so far) of Call the Midwife. I haven't heard too much lately on the status as to whether or not the show was going to be brought back again (the online campaign to save it has been amazing!), but I truly hope so!!!
DeleteThank you, honey. We'll be embarking for Calgary in two weeks and I can't wait! I swear, I'm so excited, I'm already having a heard time falling asleep at night from the excitement of it. There's stress, too, of course (because of my health), but the happiness and excitement are trumping the worries/stress big time at this point.
♥ Jessica
I can not stop collecting vintage hats. I've gotten more picky, but I always keep my eye out for gems. I love amazing details. And I still haven't mastered my hair so putting on a hat is a great way to add vintage into my look.

ReplyDeleteThank you for your post and your green floral extravaganza looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI do love a hat and have many, both vintage and contemporary. I wear hats on the train commute to work in winter as they keep my head warm and the rain off (a close fitting cloche and you don't need an umbrella, providing the rain isn't too heavy of course). And I wear hats in summer to keep the sun off. And I wear a hat to the races because, well, you would hardly be dressed without one (I save my really outrageous enormous hats for the races). And I wear hats on bad hair days because a hat will hide a multitude of sins. And of course I have found three that I would like to buy at Blue Rose Vintage :)
Well I just wanted to say that you look fabulous in your hat! ;) And I know how much fun it is to place one on and imagine oneself at tea at the Ritz or at a garden party! Hats can transport us from the everyday to the fantastic!
ReplyDelete~xoxo, CoriLynn
Currently I don't own any vintage hats, but would love to find one to start my collection. To me, wearing a vintage hat is the ultimate feminine aesthetic. It represents a time and a place when women celebrated their beauty with an element of modesty that has long since been lost to the ages.

I've worn hats for about 20 years now, which is funny because when I was a child (1960's and 70's) I LOATHED hats and their elastic chin straps. I buy vintage because they are more beautiful than modern hats and less expensive!
ReplyDeleteI've also liked them on facebook.

ReplyDeleteDear Jessica, thank you for this give-away (and thanks to Blue Rose Vintage of course!) and for the nice post.
I had a look at these hats, and they are all soo gorgeous! I started my own vintage-style hat-making some weeks ago, the first hat's are not yet ready to be shown, but soon. Until then I dream of an authentic vintage hat.
I love hats since I was a girl, but only now had the courage to start my own millinery adventure. I think it's a pity people don't wear hats anymore. And those who do get all too often amused or strange looks. But you are right, once you start wearing them, you can't stop. And if you wear a vintage outfit, a hat is just a must-have that accomplishes your look! It's also very practical to hide your not so perfectly vintage-styled hair on a bad-hair day. And it just makes you standing out of the crowd! :)
I LOVE your green hat, it's one I would wear too. You look fabulous!

ReplyDeleteI love vintage hats. I am just now on the path to wearing them more. I think the problem I have had in the past was that I didn't pick hats that were flattering on me, but now I have the hang of it (I think) and have a few that I love wearing. Hair (and hats) can really make or break a style. I think they really solidify my look.

I like hats for many reasons including the following: they set off an outfit, they are stylish, they hide bad hair, they emphasise good hair, they keep you warm, they shade your face, they embody a time period and they make me smile.
ReplyDeleteHats are definitely one of my favourite accessories for dressing up an outfit, or adding an extra vintage touch to something that would otherwise look modern. I would love to add a new vintage hat to my collection.

Is there anything more charming than a hat? They are the perfect finishing touch to an outfit, not to mention the perfect conversation starter!
ReplyDeleteWhich reminds me - I really should wear them more often because my collection has been rather neglected lately (other than my sun hat which gets a workout this time of year on my morning walks!). Functional hats are great, but quirky toppers are so much more fun!

ReplyDeleteThe green hat you're wearing is a beauty.
ReplyDeleteI love hats, they suit me I've always been told but they are so far between in my price range .. in fact I have purchased both hats which could be considered vintage that took my fancy that I've seen in my price range and have seen no others since. Mind you, I have seen those cake hats that Eddie Izzard makes reference to in his stand up shows but can't see me wearing them!
I love vintage hats because they tend to be so elegant in comparison to most of the hats you see today and because it's so much more fun to get dressed up when you have one that matches your outfit!
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting such a great giveaway!
Hi Jessica,
ReplyDeleteI love hats! I dress very feminine most of the time and adding a hat only adds to the charm. Vintage hats have a special charm. The exquisite details and the history behind the item. I love vintage hats because each one is so unique. They are a simple and fun way to "dress up" any outfit. I don't wear hats as often as I would like - even though I have a growing collection - because I don't think I look very good in most hats. I am catching up on old posts. I have been quite a busy bee :/ I know that the giveaway is long gone but after seeing all of these hats and since I know you know your vintage, i wanted to ask how would you clean a vintage pill box hat ? It's cream/white with pieces of thin light fabric.
ReplyDeleteMy great aunt gave it to me and I would love to wear it but it needs to be cleaned. Here the cleaners do not know how to handle anything vintage so i have to find a solution on my own. Any thoughts?
what a beautiful dress. Thanks for sharing...58eveningdress.
