Summer lingers on - it's in no hurry to give up its hard earned last couple of weeks until the final moment - and yet slowly the first stirrings of the coming season begin to appear. Mornings are chiller until the sun rises high above the horizon, the air - still oven-like in some respects - begins to feel crispier, less burdened by a need to host temperatures near a hundred degrees, and a sense that the revamping of mother nature's colour scheme will soon be underway greets one with each blade of parched grass they see flutter in the wind.

If September was a colour, I think that it would be red - not fresh and orange tinged like a growing tomato, but deep and soulful, redolent of garnets, fields of cranberries, and regal velvet robes. This is a red that has seen the first eight months of the year and lived to tell about it. Far from shy, but not one to boast, it quietly takes on the role of bridging the seasons, tinting the world in crimson its path as it goes.

This is a beautiful time of the year. It embodies both energy - still radiating like aftershocks from the past two scorching months - and serenity, a return to the usual ebb and flow of the school year, heartier comfort foods, and foliage that yearns to remain verdant, but just can't resist giving into the siren's song and taking on a tartan like array of colours.

The first half of September in the time of the year when you can still go swimming at noon and pick juicy new crop apples later on in the very same afternoon. It's sundresses and knit cardigans, peep-toe shoes and stockings.

A happy, busy, wonderful - but generally very brief - time, these in-between days will be gone before we can blink, which is all the more reason to keep one's eyes open wide as you soak up and enjoy every last, gorgeous moment.

  1. I love the weather in September: just perfect in New York. We have some of the best days now in the entire year.

  2. You are so right about blinking and fall will be over! eeek! I love all the photos but those shoes in the last photo, now those are sandals!:D
Hugs to you and puppy, which I suspect is growing like a weed?!

  3. Oh, that first picture is sooo beautiful!

What i love about this part of the year is seeing the forest change. And it's blackberry time. Every morning I walk with our dog in the forest and pluck some ripe blackberries to eat with breakfast :)

  4. oh, the plaid skier is amazing. this picture is so adorable ... how great, the lady on this picture is wearing flats. worn out loafers. how cool!

hahaha, i know group interviews and i really don't have a problem with that. to be true, there where times i invited people to those kind of interviews - but i told them about it before. ;)

  5. Your words have painted such a beautiful visual image in my mind. They have reminded me to go out and enjoy the lovely early September days. The apples on my tree are not quite ripe but when they are I plan to combine them with gathered blackberries into a crumble. If I could do that wearing the tartan skirt and the red Dolcis shoes with the handbag fastening I would be very happy!

    1. I could really use some cords myself, too. They were one of my staple garments as a youngster and teenager, but as my wardrobe shifted to one of primarily vintage or vintage style pieces, cords fell out of rotation. Much like denim, they tended to work better for me than a lot of lighter weight fabrics when it comes to pants, so I should really follow your lead and try to find myself a pair that are either vintage or fit the part. I'd love to see yours if you make some, honey.

      Happy start of autumn!

  8. Very lovely pictures :3 I think they suit the idea of 'September' very well ^^ I really like the beginning of autumn, when temperatures are still quite warm, but not scorching anymore and the leaves are only just starting to change colour a little bit.

  9. Beautiful photos and sentiments of fall!
I had no idea Maybelline has been around so long.
Too bad fall is so brief, on second thought maybe that's one reason it feels so special, much like the sweet visit of lilacs in the spring. I'm sure looking forward to the cooler weather, I've grown weary of the heat.

    1. Thank you very much, dear Ronda. I completely agree and have cited that very reason (fall's relative briefness) before as one the reasons I adore it all the more. It's here scarcely longer than a blink, but my what an incredible eyeful of beauty we receive while it does grace the world with its presence once more. I too am very ready to welcome cooler days, longer nights, and the need to layer, layer, layer! :)

      Happy start of autumn wishes,

  11. Jessica,
Like yourself, I too believe that if September was a color, it would have to be deep red, matte, (like MAC Russian red and flavored with cinnamon. :D

Girl from Maybelline 1929 add looks amazing, almost unreal.

  12. Happy Vintage Monday, doll! I absolutely love this time of year, maybe I've said that before. :) It's so lovely watching the nature working its magic and preparing itself for colder days. That it's been this warm until mid-September is really rare for my part of the world. I wish you a fabulous day!

  13. Oh, I just adore autumn. :) And this year I'm ready for it, because we've had a long and perfect summer. Very unusual in Denmark indeed. I look forward to all the indoor cosyness, hot spicy tea, looking at the flames in the fireplace, and decorating for first autumn, then Halloween, and soon after Christmas - my favourite. :)

  19. Beautiful images! I especially love the tartan skirt and wallpaper one and the "Basic Recipes" one - the food set out like that looks overwhelming and anything but basic! But it's so much fun at the same time to look at! :D
