Not literally of course - though I'm sure that might be worthy of mention unto itself, if it did happen! No, the kind of birthday suit I'm talking about was, quite literally, a suit that I received as a birthday present this year. My wonderful mom and step-dad very sweetly allot a certain amount for my birthday each year and then, if I so desire, leave it up to me to pick what I want.

This year, as my birthday rolled into sight, my thoughts were (despite, or perhaps because of the warm weather - off season shopping often lands one better deals!) planted squarely on vintage suits. Of which, previously, I owned at the time, just two.

A large part of the reason for this is that, I find, vintage suits rarely fit me well. They'll be too big, too small, too long, too bulky (for my petite frame), or any combination of those things in the same suit. Alterations done by skilled seamstress or tailor can certainly help of course, but some fit issues (especially if a garment is lined) can be trickier to remedy with suits than, say, a dress or pair of pants, and can also set you back a few clams. Ideally one always wants to aim to find garments that fit as well as possibly from the get-go, and that was not something I'd experienced over the years.

A very dear online friend and I had been discussing suits throughout much of the winter and spring, and as the year progressed, I knew that it was high time I did something about the shortage of suits in my closet. Though one might luck out and find a great bargain from time-to-time, typically a good vintage suit is a wardrobe investment item, and something that you'll want to try and make sure, at least on paper, sounds like it should fit you well.

I'd been scouring etsy and eBay quite extensively for suits for a few weeks when I hit upon the coral gem you see here. It was love at first sight. I forgot about all the other suits (and there had been hundreds) that I'd seen in previous weeks. This was the one. Reasonably priced as it was, its price tag did still make it an investment and a splurge, so I very happily opted to select it as my birthday present from my parents this year.

I waited excitedly for it to wing its way through the mail up here to Canada, and couldn't throw open the box quickly enough when it did. Other than being a tad darker coloured than I'd thought (the seller's photos were a tiny bit overexposed), it was precisely as pictured, and much to my immense delight, fit like a glove. Better than a glove, I'd say, it fit as though it had been tailor made for me - a rarity indeed, no matter the garment.

This suit is a dream. It's warm (really warm!), expertly constructed, in terrific shape, and a seriously gorgeous colour, to boot. I love the nubby, classic tweed; the glistening gold sparkle filled buttons, the shape of the lapel, where the jacket hits, the skirt length, every last, magnificent detail. This is one of the pieces that a person holds onto for a lifetime and treasures dearly, wearing it a thousand times, in an ever-so-slightly different way nearly each, throughout the rest of their days.

To model it, on a day that was both warm and rainy, we took these shots on a wee bridge in downtown Penticton. The location wasn't planned. We didn't know that there would be nearly matching flowers peppering the background, it was merely a wonderfully well (colour) coordinated moment of happenstance.

There are saffron hued threads in this tweed, so I used them as the jumping off point for my glove colour choice, as well as my gold hued brooch and vintage embroidered handbag (which was very, very kindly given to me as a gift by fellow blogger Carolynn Markey, from her lovely etsy vintage shop, Kitty Adventures, and which had once belonged to her dear grandmother; Carolynn also has another etsy shop in which she sells her delightful handmade wares called Moon of Silver, that's well worth checking out, too).

A suit like this, in such a vivid colour, is the star of the show for sure, but that doesn't mean it can't be accessorized with classic pieces such a pearl jewelry, a 1950s umbrella and lace platter hat, and my beloved brown round toe pumps. It was plenty toasty out that day, so there was no need for a blouse, sweater, or scarf underneath, just a vintage lace trimmed full slip and a pair of classic nude seamed stockings.

I love this gorgeous vintage suit to no end. It's one of the best birthday presents I've ever received and helped fill a nagging gap in my wardrobe big time. Almost unbelievably, it's actually the second suit I received as a present this year. The other though, my dears, will just have to wait for a post unto itself another day. :)

  1. You look wonderful, Jess!!!!! This suit fits you like a dream, and is such a lovely bright colour - and I really like the little flecks of blue when you see it close-up. The hat is the cherry on the cake, and I can't help but think it looks like a halo above angelic Jessica's pretty face! :)

  3. wonderful as always, it just does my heart good to see you, pretty as a picture and the hat and bag to die for. Having spent the morning wrestling with Etsy so to speak, I was just about to turn off when I spied your post, and it did wonders for revitalising me, but I'm off to sew now with my mind full of suits, but I've some berets to finish and I haven't forgotten your hat, huge hugs ally x x

    1. Sweet Alison, I am truly happy to know that this post helped perked up your day (I'm really sorry that etsy has been driving you around the bend today; I've only ever bought there - much to my wallet's chagrin, no doubt :D - so I can't offer too much firsthand knowledge on the back end side of things, I've afraid). Every blog comment from you lately as been doing precisely the same thing for me as well.

I'm so very touched (and honoured) that you're creating a hat for me. Please take all the time in the world that you need with it.

      Tons of hugs,

  6. This suit is absolutely lovely! I lvoe this color! I think this suit is very versatile when it comes to styling. Now you have a more summery/springy look, but with different accesories/colors it would be perfect for the colder seasons as well!

Oh, and I love your hair this way!

  8. Ok, new favorite outfit post!! There is just something about a well fitted suit, and this dear lady seem to fit you like a dream. A very happy belated birthday and a big congrats on an awesome vintage find! I never would have thought about pairing the suit with yellow gloves, it's different but very pleasantly so.
The colors say spring but how wonderful for fall! It's a rainy, dull kind of day hear in Vermont with very little color left on the trees. So this colorful post totally makes my day. :)

  9. Jessica! I just love your suit! You wear pink so beautifully! You are so right this suit very much looks like it was made for you. I love the a-line skirt and the fabulous details in the jacket. Oh, you just hit the jackpot. I'd certainly pick this outfit for one of the "Jessica paper dolls". The hat is so fabulous with this suit. I just love this suit on you! I also really like the shoulder detail of this suit. A rare gem indeed:) This suit reminds me of pink cotton candy and happy days:) You wear it marvelously dear friend! I just can't get over how well you wear pink:))

    1. My dearest Joanna, I swear, you've got my cheeks blushing a deeper shade of pink that this elegant fifties suit! :) Thank you so much for the beautiful compliments. I've never had a pink suit before and can't get over how much I love this one. It encompasses my personal style in one single garment so incredible well. It's feminine, sweet, sophisticated, and endlessly classic all in the same go - plus, it's my favourite colour (pink), which is a fabulous added bonus. I'm really looking forward to sporting it this winter. It's warm enough to practically let me go without an overcoat if I wanted! :)

  14. I did chuckle and do a double take when I read the title of your post! That colour is just GORGEOUS on you, really "suits" you if you'll excuse the pun. And the hat is just incredible, I always try on that style but they don't really suit my face shape so they just get left in the shop.

Thank you by the way for your long comment on my thoughts about interest in modern fashion, I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking it and was pleased to hear from a few vintage bloggers that also dabble in the modern. Hurrah for fashion, from whatever era, that's the bottom line for me!

Can't wait to see the second suit, you're a lucky girl indeed.

    1. Thank you very much, honey! I love (and frequently make) puns, so by all means, bring them on! :) I think that this style of hat really needs the lines of a late 40s - early 60s suit or dress to work in most cases. It's not the easiest style to sport, but it sure is a pretty, ladylike one. I often think of a wedding when I wear this specific cream hat and would happily sport it to one, if the occasion arose.

You're very welcome. I really did enjoy, and completely agree with, that post.

Tons of thanks & happy Tuesday wishes,

  15. It does fit like it was made for you dear Jessica.
I also admire how you have styled it.. the hat, the pearl necklace and brooch. Even the umbrella ! I had no idea that there were vintage umbrellas on sale... i've had at least 6 umbrellas in a year and they fall apart so quicky that i just feel terribly bad when i throw them out. Well, i dont throw the out, all broken ones are still in my car, the rest i have misplaced....

  18. What a beautiful suit! I simply adore the shape of it... and those buttons!! I too have issues with fitting these. They are nearly all too small or too short because I am so tall. I am always scouring the antique malls and vintage shops in my area for one in my size, but they have all been fruitless thus far. I look online too, but am wary of ordering such a (usually) pricey garment via the internet.I may just have to sew myself one!

    1. Thank you very much, sweetheart. Believe me, I completely understand what you mean. I usually don't hesitate to order a dress even when it has a hefty price tag, because I know it's very likely to fit if the measurements are indeed as stated, but with a suit, I am a million times more cautious, as there's so many different fit points that you need to get just right (or at least, which a seamstress can easily help make fit perfectly). I've bought a couple of suits online of the years that just didn't work in the end, and which I sold on to ladies for whom I hope that they did. Every now and then I see a vintage suit online that specifies it's for a taller figure. I'll be sure to let you know the next time I encounter one, in case you think it might work well for you.

      Tons of hugs,

  22. May I say, you and your new ‘Birthday Suit’ (hehee) look A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! And that colour.... Wow! You very much remind me of the super gorgeous Maureen O’Hara in this suit too! And a big “Yaaay” to the suit fitting. :) I know from experience how hard it is to find a suit that fits properly- I have such an awkward frame to fit… long arms, small waist, fairly wide shoulders, no bust…. Oh the list is endless! ;) Anyway, you look wonderful…

  32. What a perfectly, perfectly pretty suit! A definite classic, and certainly a special birthday treat. It does fit you perfectly and I love the way you've styled it. I have two vintage suits but am definitely on the look out for more, especially as one of those I have is a rather boldy coloured dress suit which, although I absolutely love it, might be a tad too bold and out there for certain meetings... I want to feel confident and chic and glamorous in a suit in a work context, but not too attention grabbing! But you're absolutely right, you need to be willing to search and search to find a well fitted one, and they are certainly investment pieces so you want to get it right.

  65. Happy Birthday! The suit looks lovely on you. The purse is beautiful! Gone are the days of feminine handbags, the bags of today are very large and have too much bling, lol. Thank goodness for vintage. I also wear Raspberry Glace, it's a pretty shade, and speaking of lipstick, Revlon is coming out with five vintage shades in 2014...Fifth Avenue Red from 1958 is one of the colors. There is a violet shade from 1946, two peach shades from 1956 and 1963 and the last is not all that vintage from 1999. They are limited edition.

    1. Thank you very much, dear April! How cool that we're both fans of Raspberry Glaze. Having pink undertones in my skin (I like to refer to my complexion as strawberries and cream), pink (and coral) lippies can be hard for me to sport sometimes, but (IMO) such is not the case with this lovely shade from Clinique. It's pretty much the only pink lipstick I've worn for years now.

Revlon's collection sounds wonderful! I love that they're bringing some of their classic hues back for a new generation to enjoy. I'll definitely be looking into those more and if they're gluten-free (anything I put on or near my lips has to be), I'll most likely give one or more hues a try. Violet sounds like it could be a lot of fun - especially a 40s violet.

  70. Hilariously misleading title!!! This suit is such a delicious shade of raspberry macaroon pink - and it looks like it would be so soft to touch too. It looks absolutely beautiful on your figure and creates the most gorgeous silhouette! I do love your hat too :)

  71. Congratulations on your beautiful gift. You look like a dream. :) You should have added "No nuditity" in the subject. :) I think the colour is great, if it had been paler, it would have been Barbie pink, not good. Yes, I'm behind with your blog again, I will read backwards, thanks to Bloglovin. I'm having a weeks autumn holiday and yesterday spent all day filling new items into my Etsy shop. So many things to do when having a holiday. :)

  81. it's beautiful! I have a vintage suit that my uncles mum wore to register her marriage. The skirt is very tight though so i'm scared to try it on. Should maybe try it though, it might fit!

    1. Thank you very much, honey. f I had a dollar for every time I'd had that thought, I could probably buy an original Dior Bar Suit! :) It's a sincere shame that most ladies don't still wear suits, especially outside of the office, any more. It's so often seen as matronly and/or overly formal, but I don't feel such is the case at all, especially if the suit happens to be a classically tailored vintage one. They're elegant, warm, versatile, and often flat out gorgeous? Why wouldn't any lady not want at least one in her wardrobe?

Many thanks again for your comment - big hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  86. How special to receive a beautiful vintage piece that fits like a dream! And I just noticed your mention of your lipstick – Raspberry Glace is my favorite color lipstick (which reminds me that I am almost out!).

    1. Hello sweet gal, thank you very much both of your wonderfully nice comments today. That's awesome! I have a pale complexion with pink undertones (I call it "strawberries and cream" :)) and often have a tricky time with pink (and coral) lipsticks, but that particular shade, unlike most pinks, doesn't highlight the rosiness in my skin. I hit upon it probably three or four years ago, and it's the only pink I've used since.

So I was scrolling down, looking at all the photos and wondering where the photo of your photo of you in your bathing suit (in October!) Not seeing any such photo, I reread the title...
