It was a dark and spooky (and very costume filled) night!

This year's Halloween was by far one of the most enjoyable I can ever recall. Though by no means as warm as 2013's (which to be fair, was unseasonably toasty), the rain that had started and stopped over and over again in the days beforehand and early on the 31st itself, let up come evening and as a result a fair number of trick-or-treaters were out in full costumed force.

We got 71 kids (we kept a running tally) that night, but the cute little children that came knocking weren't the only ones in festive disguises. Tony and I, along with my mom, step-dad, and sister all celebrated the evening at our place and everyone except from my step-dad was in costume (he had festive orange socks on though and was very much in spirit).

After finally finding a costume mere days before Halloween, I was delighted to go as someone I'd never been before for my favourite holiday: Sin-derella. She's a goth, spooky take on the fairy tale classic Cinderella and her ensemble was one of only a couple (I kid you not) costume between the four stores we went to wasn’t of the overtly "sexy" variety. I'm far from a prude and don't have personal qualms with the genre in general, I just prefer to be more covered up myself - especially on a chilly Canadian All Hallows Eve as you're repeatedly opening the front door and getting a wallop of icy air blown at you!

I added an inexpensive Halloween wig (believe me, as a full-time wig wearer due to medical hair loss, I can tell you that the difference between cheap costume wigs and real wigs, be they synthetic or human hair, intended for everyday wear is worlds apart!) in matching colours, vintage black sleeveless gloves, and a gorgeous 1930s glass bead necklace (the latter hailing from Maejean Vintage), as well as red stockings and a pair of strappy black high heels with ruffles on the vamps that I already had on hand.

Thankfully this costume's layers ensured I stay warm all evening (almost too warm at points!) and I suspect I'll definitely wear it again later in life (I usually like to space at least a few years out between when I sport the same costume twice). Both my mom and my sister, Katie, who were there that evening in their own marvelous Halloween finery said they'd like to wear it, too, so I suspect this costume will be doing the family rounds for many years to come!

Tony looked sensational in his regal purple and gold Cesar costume, which was made all the more fitting by the fact that he's a native son of not just Italy, but Rome itself! I love that over the years he's grown to share in my massive passion for Halloween (he wasn’t raised with it in Italy and his exposure, for all intents, to Halloween began with our relationship a decade ago) and now delights in dressing up right along with me.

My mom and sister are both big Halloween fans, too (much to my delight) and my mom was a vision of Renaissance inspired loveliness in her elegant purple velvet gown with gold lacing and a matching headdress (the fact that Tony and my mom’s costumes matches so well was 100% coincidental as neither knew what the other was going as before my folks got to our place that night). Usually, over the years, my mom's Halloween attire has veered more in towards witches and other darkly clad figures, so it was quite the surprise when she arrived in this gorgeous princess costume. I think she looked stunning and do believe this is my favourite Halloween costume she's ever sported.

Katie, who arrived a bit later in the evening after she got off work and drove down from Kelowna (where she lives), tapped into her 1990s childhood and did a stellar job of putting together a very authentic looking Brittany Spear's ensemble from the music video for the song that made her an overnight star: Baby One More Time (complete with a borrowed grey cardigan from my closet - my vast collection of them means that I've always got you covered if you need a certain colour of cardi! :D).

On top of handing out candy to kids, we lit jack-o-lanterns, took scores of snaps (with the younger generation posting some of their to Instagram, natch! :)), ate oodles of delicious snacks (including GF caramel sauce and fruit slices - sooo yummy!), listened to a spooky sounds CV, and had a blast celebrating this most hauntingly memorable of evenings!

It's hard to believe that another Halloween is behind us already, but as this one was so awesomely enjoyable, we all agreed that it just makes us look forward to 2015's all the more. And you can bet your bottom dollar that baring major unforeseen circumstances, I'll have my costume selected wayyyy earlier next year. In fact, I've already got some ideas in mind and we haven't even hung up the first string of Christmas lights yet.

What can I say, once a Halloween lover, always a Halloween lover!!! :)

  2. What great costumes! They're all terrific. Your mom looks so beautiful; almost as if she isn't wearing a costume at all but is really a fairy-tale Queen. And your sister nailed the Brittany look. Tony looks like he just walked off the set of a Mel Brooks movie. And you're so darn cute. I'm glad you and your family enjoyed the holiday. I know how much it means to you.

  3. What a beautiful family:)! It is so nice to see this as a family event. Your mother looks so youthful. I'm sure you get the comments all the time that you look like sisters:) So nice to see a picture of Tony and you together. Splendid outfits. I very much like your wig too! You could even put this into another outfit choice quite easily. I love this Halloween costume. You are such a glamourous Sin-derella. It's amazing how even though you were shopping in modern shops you were able to find a costume with a vintage vibe. You have the magical touch dear Jessica:) You truly look beautiful.

    1. My very dear friend, you are exceedingly sweet and kind, thank you so much!!! This was such a fun post to pen and gather up the snaps for. I definitely need to do more that feature my relatives (at least those who don't mind showing up on my blog) and where the photos are interspersed with the text, as I did here (it's not a format I use often with my outfit posts).

Aww, I will pass that compliment along to my mom and I'm sure her day will be made as a result of it. Perhaps because we (physically) look so vastly different, I can't say as though we've often been called sisters. Though we have had people just assume we were friends, not relatives a few times (including once when we ran into my mom's dentist at Safeway).

So true, thank you. And you know, it wasn't even a conscious hunt. I just seem to be drawn to vintage-y styles no matter where I go or what I wear.

Tons of hugs - you made my day here, too!

    1. That's is so awesome to know, dear Jenny, thank you very much!!! I really do as well! I think the fact that my mom has always enjoyed Halloween and made it an important holiday in our household when I was growing up was a major contributing factor in why I'm so crazy about it to this day (and always will be!).

I hope you had a fabulous All Hallows Eve as well, darling gal!

I'm excited about that already, too. I have't nailed anything down quite yet, but a few ideas are definitely swirling around in my head and I think that I'll be much more prepared come 2015 than I was this uber busy year that saw travel and illness so close to the big day itself.

Tons of hugs and kisses right back at you, my darling friend!

  10. My first though was how different you look with dark hair and brows! You could pull it off IRL if you wanted to. Your dress is gorgeous - almost like a ball gown really, but with a spooky theme, and every other member of the family looks amazing, too. I'm so glad you had a lovely evening xx

My sister told me that she was talking to a coworker that day and said she was going to "my sister's place tonight, because she loves Halloween more than Christmas!". That made me smile, because it's true, I do (though I madly adore Xmas as well, don't get me wrong) and because my sweet sis opted to spend her Halloween night at our place. :)

  12. Looks like fun! I wish my family was as into dressing up and Halloween as I am, I don't think I have ever seen my parents in costumes, not even when I was little! I'll have to convince them someday.

I really like your wonderfully goth look Jessica, the dark wig looks great on you, even if it isn't the best quality. I only own one costume wig but I bought it at the most fun shop on Hollywood boulevard. There are these costume/wig shops there (some run by wonderful drag queens it must also be stated) with a huge selection of better quality costume wigs (there had proper wigs as well too) and I invested in a huge 18th century wig (like the ones Kiera Knightly wore in the film The Duchess). It was a really fun shopping trip that I don't think I'll ever forget!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That shop sound fabulous!!! I've yet to step foot in an actual wig shop (we don't have any in my town). It's something - whether I buy anything or not - I should aim for the next time we're somewhere big like Vancouver or Calgary. There are definitely some better quality costume wigs out there - in fact, the wig I wear day in and day out (Pinup from Jon Renau) is technically classified by the brand and most wig shop websites as a costume wig. So I don't knock them in the slightest! :)

Thank you very much for your great comment, dear gal!

      ♥ Jessica

*PS* I really hope you're able to convince your folks to dress up. Perhaps suggesting a themed costume that you could all wear together (say, like the Three Musketeers or three well known characters from the same movie) would help sway them to the costume side. :)

  17. I love seeing the pictures of Tony and your family. It sounds like you had a fabulous night. I so agree about all the "sexy" costumes, and it makes me sad the sexy = skimpy. I'm not hating on the ladies who enjoy the skimpy stuff, I just wish there were more options and younger girls would see that their are more options and they aren't stuck wearing the skimpy stuff, especially here in Alaska.

    1. Precisely! That is my take as well. Even between this year and last, I noticed quite a decline in the number of less skimpy costumes to be had around these parts. I madly adore the costume I wore this year, but had I not found it, I would have had almost no other store bought options and likely would have put something together with items I had to hand already (which isn't a negative, but I do like intentionally buying a costume that differs from my usual garb). I think that next year, if I'm buying (not making or piecing together), I may order one online, where there are still a few more options with a greater degree of coverage to them! (I was thinking a few days ago that someone should start of a site that stocks only, or at least mostly, more modest Halloween costumes - there would be a real desire for it, I'm sure).

Thank you very much for your terrific comment, dear gal!

  19. Thank you sweetly, dear Dawn. My mom is so, so stunning. She's been turning heads and garnering compliments about her beauty my (and her) whole life. I think that Katie (my sister) resembles her far more than I do, but there are subtle similarities that we share in common (including both having hourglass figures).

As a child I had pale, Nordic-like blonde hair that darkened to a horribly dull, unattractive mousy light brown when I hit puberty. I didn't like it one iota and began colouring my hair at age 16. I played around with a lot of hues in those early days, but ultimately always returned to shades of red or auburn, which tend to look better on me than blonde and brunette hues.

Many thanks again & happiest start of November wishes to you!

  24. Finally, it's THAT post!
I have seen a hint of what you wore on your Instagram account.. but is what I have been waiting for. Why? Because we don't have it here, and it looks like loads of fun.
Something that might look and feel similar to Halloween we have on Christmas eve (oh, yes!)... it's a mixture of carolling and trick-and-treat.. But, due to it's being in the middle of winter, trust me when I say this: there are LOT of little fingers getting frozen for the sake of getting candies (and wallnuts! ...for some reason).

    ..
    Your entire familiy looks divine.
Give my best to your mother, she was amazing (and photogenic, too). Seeing Tony on this blog is a rare occasion, since he's mostly on the other side of the camera. :) My best to him, too.
And, do say "hello" to your sis, her costume took some level of liberty; that I personally never had.
    ..
    Now: you.
Your dress gives out the vibe of mixed medevial-maiden and "Morticia Addams". Your makeup is attractive, and the contrast beween bright face and dark facial features trully emphasizes the entire look. And my verdict is: I LIKE IT!

    Have a great day.
    Lots of hugs

And you have your own private Greek God! With sandals and everything. :) One day I'll dress up for Halloween too, since I love it as much as you do. Three set of children ran my door this year, and that's many in Denmark. I think I missed a group of children, because DH invited me out. Son laughed at me when the door bell rang and I rushed out. "Do you look forward to seeing them?" he asked puzzled. "Yes, I really do!" That's almost the best part of it. I hope you have a notebook to write your ideas in, because in a year you have forgotten your great ideas. At least I have, and then it's good to have a little book to remind you. Wishing you a lovely day. :)

Aww, that's awesome! I get your excitement 100%! That's how I feel when kids come to our door as well. If I miss a group (say because I'm in the powder room), I feel a little bummed until the next time the bell rings and I can be there, big bowl of candy in hand, to greet them. It's wonderful that you got some trick-or-treators this year! I hope that the number continues to multiple for you with each passing Halloween.

    1. Thank you sweetly, dear Faye. Several folks have commented that they too think that raven hued locks work well for me. Part of the reason, I believe, that they do here is because I mixed white costume make-up in with my usual foundation to neutralize the pink tones in my skin. Without it, when I've tried black hair before (such as the time in my late teens I dyed my hair black and was teased horribly by adult co-workers - we're talking women in their 30s to 60s here - for it to the point where within days I was at a salon forking over nearly $200 incredibly hard earned dollars at a time when I made only little more than a grand a month, to have it striped out and my usual red put back in) it made me look a bit like Sleeping Beauty with a bad sunburn. However, given the positive response I've gotten here, I'm wondering if I could maybe pull it off for daily (or at least occasional) wear if I wore heavier foundation and powder or perhaps at this age, with my face looking quite different than it did when I was a teen, it wouldn't be so bad even if my rosy cheeks shone through. Definitely some room for experimenting there! :)

    1. Thank you very much, darling gal!!! I've always had a bit of a goth streak actually and tried my hand (as many do at that age) at wearing goth looks when I was in my mid-teens. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to pull them off very well. For the most part, I just looked like a rosy cheeked kid on Halloween night, not a mysterious, alluring lady of great gothic fashion sense. Still, I've always maintained a love for goth looks, so it really made my day when you said that this one suited me. Thank you!!!

Gosh, I hope you're right. I know that with each passing year I see the effects of how my medical problems age me. Even Tony said to me matter-of-factly a few weeks ago that I don't look 30. (To his eyes) I look like a 23 or 24 year old who is extremely tired. I'll roll with that description and think it's fairly true. I'm not sure if I still look quite that young, but I definitely see the ravages of many years of ill health and awful sleep on my face. Nevertheless, hopefully some of those good genes you talked about are in my DNA, too, and I'll still have a sprightly quality to my face when I hit my 50s as well (fingers crossed!).

Thank you again, my dear friend. Have a marvelous weekend!

    1. Thank you very much, my fellow Halloween nut! :) Gosh, it's hard to believe how quickly November is whizzing past already. Was it really twelve days ago that we shot these snaps? It feels like all of five minutes.

Big hugs & happy Remembrance Day wishes,

  39. Jessica you totally rocked HAlloween ! It may sound weird but you look lovely in this costume. Odd thing that a scary costume makes you look so pretty.
Speaking of pretty, check out your beautiful mom !

    1. Thank you very much, dear Lorena. It seems that a tons of people like (prefer?) how I look with black hair and oodles of eye makeup. That fact is definitely giving me plenty to think about. Maybe I should sport both more often! :)

  40. Your whole family look amazing! Great costumes. I'm so used to seeing you in a particular style that the gothic fairytale is a big change, but it suits you so well!

    1. Thank you very much, darling gal. I've had such an overwhelmingly positive response to how I looked that night that I'm seriously considering wearing a smokey eye (albeit not one that's quite this OTT) and perhaps even a black wig more often. :)

  42. You guys look so awesome! I am sorry to say this, but Tony really wins with his toga, he looks fab! Your make up is amazing though and your sister could pass for Britney Spears (I am having major ab envy right now).

  43. Such a cool costume, really it is. And how cute that your Mama and Tony had accidentally matched. I did the same costume I do every year. A aspiring author... :-P

    1. It was really cool and such a neat surprise! I don't think they could have matched batter colour wise, had they tried. :)
