Waaaaayyyy back in December 2011, I blogged about finding one of my vintage grails - a quilted 1950s black circle skirt - and how I'd not only unearthed it at long last, but done so at a stellar price. Though I've worn that skirt scores of times since then, it has somehow escaped appearing on my blog until now (baffling, I know! :)).

This outfit, so very common of the sort I sport (with a coat or jacket over top) in the winter, is what I wore for Valentine's Day this year (so hence the plethora of hearts, right down to the black sheer heart print gloves). As nearly months have somehow whizzed past since then - seriously, where did they go?! - before we really get into the thick of late spring and then summertime weather and their accompanying fashions, I wanted to share these photos with all of you.

As I'd posted about earlier in February, I really wasn't feeling a saccharine sweet palette or even pink at all (strange for me, I know) this Valentine's Day, but I didn't want to forgo dressing for the holiday entirely either. Instead I paired red with black, grey and silver and opted to let my festive feelings shine through the wearing of so many hearts.

Don't let my lack of a coat fool you, it was seriously chilly that day and I had goose bumps a plenty going on - at least on the top half of my body. On the bottom, between the grey tights, red crinoline, and quilted black circle skirt, I was relatively warm, save for my feet. Up top I opted for a vintage appropriate grey button front shirt, a beloved 1930s beaded necklace from Maejean Vintage, a cute little silver toned vintage dangle brooch complete with cupid charm, a red and silver vintage heart buckle stretch belt, and a pair of sheer black lace gloves that offered virtually no warmth, but were definitely in keeping with the spirit of the day. Earrings and a sheer red vintage hair scarf capped the casually cute ensemble off (with my usual black faux suede heels wrapping things up at the other end).

They were images were shot down at Okanagan beach here in Penticton right beside the SS Sicamous, where one finds a charming vintage tugboat permanently moored a few feet out into the water. Tony and I were busy critters on Valentine's Day, running errands, as we tend to on the weekend, and spending the evening celebrating with family at my mom's house, and I didn’t realize in the moment just how wrinkled my shirt has become throughout the day! Oh well – that’s real life!

Now that I've finally shared this skirt on camera, chances are you'll see it here again and again as time goes on. I find that to often be the case the with pieces I've had for ages, but not posted about sooner - perhaps its a way of making up for lost time (doubly so in this case, given how I'd yearned for a skirt just like this for ages).

Though it was just a couple of months ago, it feels like a long time since Valentine's Day and looking back at these snaps, I'm grateful that winter has retired for another year once more and that, fun as the holidays that season houses are, we can focus on spring and summer for a several months now.

For while I do certainly love winter in many wonderful ways, I "heart" warm weather even more! :)

    1. Ooohhh, how lovely! Care to share your radar's path with me? :) I so love vintage quilted skirts. I have two so far (this black beauty and a lovely red gem, also from the 50s that somehow hasn't had a post of its own either yet, though I did share it two Christmases ago in an Instagram snap) and would adore adding more to my closet as time goes on.

I've been thinking of you lately, sweet lady, and hope that you're having a good week and that things are doing okay on the mojo front.

Huge hugs & happy weekend wishes,

  6. Lucky you to have found a vintage black quilted circle skirt! I love that the quilting makes it a warm girly look, something you can wear during colder seasons as well as most of the year too. I'm waiting now to see how you will pair up that not too basic black with all sorts of fun tops and things.
p.s. I can't help but add that Gertie at Blog for Better Sewing is actually doing a sewing tutorial on how to make one of these darling quilted circle skirts--after seeing you in yours it kinda makes me want to try doing that!

That's so cool! I will definitely go check out her tutorial (I'm not a sewer myself, but I love sharing great sewing tutorials in some of my monthly "Vintage Link Love" posts for all my dear online friends and readers who are). Thank you very much for letting me (us) know, sweet gal.

    1. Hi sweet Shauna, goodness, do I hear you there! Though I did start buying vintage in my teens, when I think back to the late 90s and the plethora of mid-century offerings that could still be had for a song at our local thrift stores, it's all I can do to not start weeping uncontrollably. Granted, I didn't have the funds to start stockpiling for myself or my future shop then by any means, but still, I would happily have bought a few less typical teenage purchases and more vintage had I know the well would dry up so very quickly (so to speak). Oh well! There's no going back in time and at least as we got older we learned to snap up vintage that worked for us when we found it, as one never knows now how long it might be before the next great score comes along.

      Have a marvelous weekend!

Speaking of skirts, I saw your social media post about the novelty skirts you're currently "grailing" and will let you know right away if I come across any of them online or off (I so want one of the mining ones as well, as have a huge passion for anything antique or vintage + mining related thanks to my family ties to the Klondike gold rush). If you find one and then a second down the road of that skirt, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Thank you! They really are a super charming pair of gloves and I love that those cutesy, they're also really alluring thanks to their colour and sheer fabric, which means they can work well with a rather wide range of outfits.

    1. Excellent spotting, my eagle eyed friend, my wedding ring is indeed a (white gold and diamond) heart. In all the years I've been blogging and sharing outfit snaps, only a couple of other people have ever noticed that in so much as I was aware that they did because they commented on it. I had wanted a heart wedding ring my whole life and truly lucked out that we found this one - the last the jewelry store we got it from had - when we did. I couldn't have found a ring that was more perfectly "me" than had I designed it from scratch myself.

You're very welcome, sweet gal. Thank you much for entering TBFS's giveaway and for saving the coupon code. I opted to run it all month so that folks could have lots of time to window shop, if so desired and to always take advantage of picking up new items I list this month a discounted price.

I hope you're doing well and having a great April so far. Many thanks for your lovely comment and for making me beam because you noticed my heart ring.

It did take some hunting for sure, but the wait was more than worth it because I scored this beauty at about 1/4 the price of what they were selling for at the time back in 2011. I hope that I can luck out and score some further circle skirts (I also have a great red 50s quilted skirt that I'll have shine the spotlight on here one day as well) for good deals as time goes on, too.

    1. Love it! :) So true, it would be uber easy to take these gloves (or the belt) in a 1980s direction, as that's the era they hail from. I love that they can do a pretty convincing job of looking the 40s and 50s part, too, though. Vintage fashions often have a great chameleon factor like that, which is yet another reason why I adore them to bits.

Thank you very much for your great comment, lovely Tami Lee. Have a splendid, fun filled weekend!

    1. They really are sensational, I agree. The 80s deserve so much more credit than they usually get on the fashion front. Not only did they produce plenty of their own fantastic "of the moment" styles, but their odd to the 1940s and 50s is unparalleled so far in history (and I doubt it will ever be matched again in the mainstream fashion world).

I do love the seasons big time and really try to incorporate the gifts of each into my life (and wardrobe) in as many ways as possible. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, beauty and charms and I really couldn't fathom the year with any of them missing from it.

Thank you very much for your wonderfully nice comment, dear Michelle. I hope that you have a terrific, fun filled weekend!

    1. My keen eyed friend, that is a compliment of the highest magnitude. I swear, if at this point in time someone could wave a magic wand and make me healthy enough to peruse a career outside of the home, I would be a doctor + chef + costumer (and/or fashion designer). Naturally, I would need three careers to make up for the years that my chronic illnesses robbed from me on that front! I hope that doesn't sound sad or like I'm pitying myself, neither is intended. I just mean that I'd want to cram in as much as I could to make up for lost time.

Of those three things, I think designer is the most likely I could ever do from home, and you know I actually have a secret dream of either opening my own repro line or collaborating with an existing one. I'm not currently pursuing this dream in any major kind of way, but it's one that's been there for years and likely always will be. Time and a bit of luck will tell whether or not its ever able to happen.

Huge hugs & the happiest of weekend wishes coming your way!

I really do think that adopting this approach is one of the best ways to look awesomely well put together and on top of your style game. It always sends a shudder up my spine to see how infrequently it's done in modern fashion magazines or on the average person you spot out and about it. Thankfully this timeless art is not lost in the vintage world and I sincerely hope it never is.

    1. Hi sweet Lindsay, thank you very much for the blush inducingly lovely compliments on these photos. I know that they'll touch Tony as much as did me.

      Oodles of hugs,

  38. Such lovely photos and an equally wonderful outfit to match! I especially love the picture where you're forming the heart with your hands ❤ and the bench shot.

I hope you are well x

    1. Thank you very much, lovely lady. It just seemed natural to toss another heart into the mix on Valentine's Day and in context of that outfit, so I went with it and was pleased to see the shape worked out when I saw the photos later.

Aside from some rather serious family issues lately, I'm good, thank you. I hope you're having a great April and that life and weather are both smiling on you this week.

      Big hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  39. Such a charming Valentine's day outfit, no nausey at all. I really love the colour combo. Your quilted skirt is fabulous, I fully understand why you are so pleased with it. Is it warm, or does it just look like it is? I love your red petticoat, bag and belt details. And I love Tony's photos of you, especially the one where you sit on the bench and the hand-heart, do tell him. Yes, time flies. I have lately thought about Christmas, I think it was just like yesterday, but it is long gone. Fortunately, we don't get older, haha. Have a lovely day, my friend. :)

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Sanne. It's such a great fabric weight. Not too heavy, not too thin, so it can comfortably be worn in all but the very hottest and coldest times of the year. I have another 50s quilted circle skirt, a red one, which has a somewhat suede meets velour type of feel to the fabric and that's heavier, so in the depth of winter, I can still wear that with tights under it and a jacket/coat atop.

I will certainly tell him. I really mean it when I say that the positive feedback he gets here on his photos means a great deal to him. He puts in tireless hours with his day job and side (online) businesses (websites), both of which rarely come with compliments, let alone those of the absolutely lovely nature many of my readers send his way.

Exactly! Time flies, but we stay young forever (I wish!). I've been thinking about my (our) beloved Halloween a lot lately and am already brainstorming ideas for this year's costume. If at all avoidable, I don't want to wait until the 11th hour again, especially given how few non super sexy options there in the shops around here nowadays. I'll likely either make/put together or order my costume online well in advance.

Many thanks again. I hope that you're doing wonderfully and enjoying a sunny, beautiful week!

      Big hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  40. can i just say how much i ADORE those gloves?! they are so precious and adorable and i love that you're always wearing gloves (i'm sure partly as a functional thing because you're only just coming out of winter) because they're so your style now. and isn't it funny how the staples that we wear all the time somehow don't seem special enough to warrant an outfit post of their own and it's a while before we even realise it - but where would we be without them? you can't go past a decent black circle skirt, and especially not a thicker quilted one like that which would be essential for beating the cold! hope you've been well lovely xx

  41. The colour palette of your outfit matches beautifully with that of your surroundings adding even more loveliness to these photos. The quilted circle skirt is just marvellous, how I would love one of these! As usual I love all the little details of your outfit and the brooch is just perfect for Valentine's Day.
