Okay, first and foremost, I fully realize that it isn't quite summer yet, but we have reached the month that houses its beginning and that's as good as the same thing for me! :)

Secondly, and I really need to mention this off the bat for my own piece of mind, things look strangely bunchy around my waist here because I had a crinoline over a skirt with both a shirt and a cropped cardigan topped into said skirt, all further topped off with a stretch belt. That point was probably visually obvious, but I wanted to bring it up all the same.

Now on with the show!

This amazing 1950s Egyptian novelty print patio set. Oh...my...vintage fashion loving word!!! It is the be all to end all, and I have my wonderful longtime blog sponsor The Best Vintage Clothing, to thank for it.

Their offerings are always incredibly appealing and very stylish, so when Laura, the lovely woman in charge of that online vintage selling empire, offered me the chance to pick one of their beautiful garments to receive as a review gift, I felt like a kid in a candy store to say the least.

Originally I had planned to save debuting this fabulous vintage patio set - my first ever actually (I have a 1950s Southwestern style patio dress, but not a two piece play set/patio set like this novelty print stunner) - for my birthday in July, however there is a chance that Tony may be going to the US for work this summer. As such, given that he’s my usual photographer, that might mean that a shoot on the big day wouldn't happen and there was no way on earth I was going to let the season slip by without sharing this sensational set with you guys!

Boasting a short sleeve, button front blouse and matching full (though not quite circle width) skirt, this dark turquoise, red, pine green, grey and white is beyond awesome!

Made of high quality cotton (that is somewhat redolent of a texture percale), in good shape (there are a few small, faint stains here and there, which I was aware of from the get go and which you really can't see unless you're up close and looking for them), and very charming, this set is such a good representation of the kind of highly desire vintage and antique fashions that The Best Vintage Clothing houses on their standalone website, as well as their eBay store, and their ever-expanding Etsy shop.

Interestingly, these photos were taken fairly early (around 9 am) in the morning, not in the afternoon. This is noteworthy (to me at least :)) because it's the first morning shot I've ever done for my blog.

Though I can see now that I was squinting a bit more than I'd felt like I was at the time and there were some shadows at play in the location (the grassy side embankment of the running track at a school down the street from our house), I flat out loved shooting in the morning and said to Tony that we should definitely aim to do so more often, especially in the late spring, summer, and early fall, when the weather is conducive to it.

This is a bold fifties patio set, both in terms of the colour and the off-the-charts cool Egyptian themed novelty print (which is, itself, another first for me, as I didn't previously own anything with an Egyptian revival design/pattern to it), so I stuck with colours pulled from it for my accessories, which include a super fun 1980s does 1950s green plastic necklace, some classic pearls on my wrists, my beloved red vintage handbag, four hair flowers, emerald green nail polish on my fingers, a green stretch belt from Hell Bunny, a red crinoline underneath the skirt, and black vintage-y style wedge sandals (plus a thin knit grey cropped cardi up top).

I won't even beat around the bush, this is not only one of my favourite outfits of the year so far, but one of my favourites I've blogged about. I love the colours, the fullness of the skirt, the terrific Egyptian novelty print, the silhouette (save for the little bit of "bulk" above the belt), the delightful - and surprisingly handy - lower pockets on the skirt (they're great for tucking your hands into while sitting, which is often tricky with waist or hip height pockets), every last little thing, and I truly want to thank The Best Vintage Clothing for the wonderful gift of this 1950s set, which really does feel like an early birthday present and then some!

Whether I sport both pieces together or separately, you can bet that you'll most likely spot them again here as time goes on and I'm eager to see how many fun outfits I can come up with for both halves of this stellar patio set (I'm envisioning the top working well with jeans and the skirt with everything from sweaters to my black boat neck top).

While nothing is set in stone yet, if Tony does end up traveling for work this summer (he'll be gone for over two months solid, if does), I will be sure to post here and let you guys know. For now though, he's still home and we're both loving the return of (nearly) summer weather, grabbing photo shoots when we can, and celebrating all that is great about this time of the year - very much including that it's the season for charming vintage patio sets (which I'm more in love with now than ever, thanks to the fact that I finally have one of my own!).

  1. Such a lovely outfit but I must confess that I have never heard of a 'patio set' except in the context of furniture, hehe! Nevertheless it is very lovely and you look glorious ❤

The weather is finally looking appropriate for June here which is a relief after the initial hiccup at the start so I can't wait to pull on lots of summery clothes and I look forward to seeing similar outfits in your posts xx

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Melanie! It could be termed a playset, too, but I tend to think of those as having either shorts, a swimsuit, a shorter length skirt, or a crop top, and this lacks (much to my delight, I should add, as I don't tend to wear such garments) any of those.

Same here! After an unusually damp June, then a fabulous lightning and thunder storm at the start of the month, we're getting some glorious sunshine here and I feel like summer is just itching to burst forth with reckless abandon!

Big hugs & many thanks again,

And I agree about getting photoshoots done in the morning - I love the feeling of having one in the bag to feel pleased about the rest of the day :) I realise I have an email from you where you mentioned Tony's travels to reply to. No worries at all, I love hearing from you anytime. Though we're still waiting to hear about his Visa, things are moving forward as though he was/is going and this is going to be a busy month for sure because of it.

      Tons of hugs,

  4. For the record I did not think you had too much going on at the waist and I had to go back and check and thought I'm not sure what bunching I'm supposed to see.
This is such a beautiful outfit and that colour!! I can see why this is a favourite. I don't know why but emerald green nail polish is now on my have to have list.

    1. Aww, thanks! I'm sure it's just me being my usual waaaaaaaay to self-conscious self. :)

Thank you too regarding the outfit and colours here. I am ridiculously in love with them - like, I sort of want to wear this outfit everyday until fall returns level in love with them. :)

Any shade of dark green, from lustrous emerald to the darkest pine is a perpetual favourite of mine and I must say, they're surprisingly versatile as cosmetics colours. I don't wear coloured eye shadows (aka, non-neutral tones) all that often these days, but when I do, at least half the time its either blue or green (greys, golds and purples make up the others as a general rule).

Big hugs & many thanks again for your absolutely lovely comment,

  6. Funny thing that the first thing you comment is that your waist looks bunchy and that the first thing I was going to say is that your waist looks so tiny and that I love how the layers work here: belt, skirt, cardi…. I guess we all do see things under a different prism. Hugs.

    1. Hi sweet Lorena, so true! I know it's just me being my usual way too self-conscious self here and that I could have easily said nothing and I doubt anyone would have raised a peep about (my perceived?) bunchiness. Thanks! My waist is actually relatively slender at the narrowest spot (about 27", though I do usually go up anywhere from 1 to 4 inches in the waist and torso with my clothing sizing, as tight pieces with little or no stretch to it can be painful for some of my medical conditions), but sometimes because I'm short and quite curvy, it can get lost or at least not fully defined in clothing, so I love it when cinch style belts or other garments help to define its true shape/size better.

Thanks again & tons of hugs right back to you!

    1. That's extremely kind of you to say, my fellow fashion blogger. I delight in the process to no end, really and truly (especially composing my outfits). Were my health to permit, I'd happy do an outfit shot every day of the year, even in the icy dead of the long Canadian winter. It doesn't though, so I just happily and gratefully take the days I can and try to get in as many shots when the sun is shining in particular as possible.

Thanks again & have a fabulous end of the week!

  11. Can I just say: "WOW! what a catch that Egyptian themed patio set is. It's adorable, and as you mention, each piece has lots of potential going out on their own too. That is my idea of the perfect wardrobe set. I also want to add that you are so super for noting the flaws, but going right ahead and wearing it with style. It's vintage after all, and should have a little history to show for it.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You most certainly can (say "WOW!") - thank you so much, lovely Jen! I'm with you there entirely. If a piece is still intact structurally and the stains or minor flaws aren't horrible visible, I'm all for continuing to wear and get the most out of vintage (or modern, for that matter) pieces. The longer a vintage piece can keep serving its purpose, the better in my books.

Many thanks again & have a fantastic Friday!

  12. What a glorious ensemble!!! Second thought: with POCKETS! Hehe. And I doubt I would have noted the bulk issue if you hadn't mentioned it- there are just so many other great details to look at that something as insignificant as what's tucked into what becomes completely irrelevant!
I really love the added touch with the green polish as well. :D

    1. True, true! I'm just a really self-conscious person and tend to feel like I have to mention things like that, even though honestly the bulk is less noticeable here than it felt in person. It's amazing, colorful, feminine, you look stunning! I must confess I didn't notice anything bad about the cropped cardigan and then the set and petticoat and stretch belt, but I know what you mean - I think the photos look perfect! I hope you get to wear the set many other times and that you enjoy the time you have with Tony - but you know, time flies, so in case he has to travel, he will be back home soon! That's how we're looking at things, too, especially because if he does end up going, this will be the longest period (by far!) that we've been apart since trying the knot over 10.5 years ago. Thankfully we'll both be super busy with our respective daily lives and given that it's summer, often the season that feels like it goes by the fastest, I'm sure it won't be too hard to cope with, even though we will both miss each other something fierce!

    1. That is awesomely nice of you to say, Laura, thank you so much!!! I adore how just about anything was fair game when it came to novelty prints in the 1940s, 50s, and early 60s, as this great patio set demonstrates. Long after the huge wave of earlier 20th century Egyptian Revivalism was over, fun pieces like this helped to keep its spirit alive and going strong a bit longer.

  17. That's really cute, Dawn! :) I get that entirely! One could loosely extend the term playset to apply here, too, but as it lacks some of the more common elements of such (such a pair of shorts, a crop top, or a swimsuit), I refrained from calling it such and went with a term that was often used for this style back in the fifties themselves.

Aww, you're too sweet! (Re: my waist.) Thank you! I'm short and very curvy, so my waist, which is relatively slender, can easily get hidden or "bulked up" to a degree by some outfits. I love it when cinch belts like this or other garments help its true size to shine through better.

Many thanks again for your great comment. Have a fantastic Friday!

Not only am a natural born night owl, but my sleep is perpetually on a wonky (unintentional) schedule due to the impact of my medical conditions on it (I've had severe painsomnia brought on by many of them for about 13 years now and rarely get much sleep as a result). But I don't mean to get all serious sounding there - I just bring that up to stress that I'm with you on the not being an AM person, and that that is no small part of the reason why this is my first morning outfit post in over six years of blogging. :)

  23. Amazing! Egyptian revival is my favorite "trend" of the 20th century (both the 20's one, and the 50's/60's). I am not really one for modern trends, but novelty ones like Egyptian revival are right up my alley. This set if full of beautiful colors, I would have never thought to put dark green and turquoise together like this and the colors look so pretty together! It is interesting to see a revival piece in cool tones, as most of the pieces/fabrics I have seen before are more tan/gold/red based. Congrats on such a great addition to your wardrobe!

  27. Hi, Jessica! You might have answered this already, but what defines a 'patio set' from other shirt and skirt separates?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wonderful question, Ally! While I'm not sure if there was ever a hard and fast definition written in stone, so to speak, a patio set (aka, patio dress, even though it's frequently two separate garments) is usually described as a blouse and skirt set that is akin to the Southwestern "squaw" (I use that word only in its historical garment context, not as the derogatory term that it is today), but often (though not always) less Southwestern inspired/looking. It's name, as I've read before, sprang up from the patio/bbqing culture that thrived in the 50s and early 60s, particularly on the American west coast.

I personally opted for this term here because I didn't feel this was a play set per se (it doesn't have shorts, a shorter length skirt crop top, and/or swimsuit) and it wasn't Southwestern enough in my books to be deemed a "square dress/set", though some people might define it as such. Plus, I think it's a fun name that helps conjure up summery thoughts. :)

Many thanks again & have a fantastic weekend,
      ♥ Jessica

    1. Thank you very much, sweet dear. Objectively, as Tony's workday starts at 6 am usually, morning shoots aren't likely to ever become that commonplace, regardless of if I was up and ready or not, but I would like to try and grab the occasional one like this on the weekends or if we're on holiday. The light then can be so sharp, pure and even gentle at that time of the day - it's a different creation to afternoon and evening light and I must say, I rather like it.

Fabric and fashion designers of the past were (often) so skilled in that area, and I respect them and their work for it to no end.

Wishing you a splendid weekend, too!

  32. That set is just beyond words! The print absolutely took my breath away, what an amazing find. You look gorgeous, as always - I love the way your accessories pick up that bit of green and red in the print, setting it off beautifully.

    1. Thank you very much, sweet gal! I've been champing at the bit to sport this necklace (which I picked up a few months ago) on camera, but was waiting for the right outfit and this was definitely it!

      Have a fantastic week!

  34. What a delightful patio set! I love how you were able to pull practically every single color from the Egyptian motif out and use it to choose your accessories! Positively lovely!

    Cheers!

    1. Thank you very much, lovely Brigid. That approach to colour coordination (basing accessories off of the hues in a print) is one of my "getting dressed" secrets. I flat out love it when outfit components match and when prints like this lend themselves easily to that happening, thanks to the fact that I already have accessories in the same hues.

Wishing you and your sisters a terrific week!

    1. Thank you very much, dear Akram. I am beyond in love with the colours at work here. They're each amongst my very favourites ever, so landing so many in the same vintage novelty print just made me adore this garment all the more.

Big hugs & happy Monday wishes,

  36. That dress looks amazing!! I don't think it looks bunched at the waist. I always love the colours that you use together - you are very clever at it.

  37. You look so fresh, happy and lovely in these photos, so perhaps you should make more morning photo shoots. You are a very lucky gal to receive this set, I love the colour and I truly love how you have matched it with red and green. I would never have done so, but it looks SO great. And I love your green nails! :) I will mail you tomorrow when I have my weekly day off. Have a nice day, dear. :)

    1. That's very sweet of you to say, dear Sanne. Thank you! While morning shots will not become the norm for us anytime soon, I think that - during the summer at least - we can aim for a few more indeed! :)

I swear, I had a feeling that you'd love the green nails and I was thinking of you while we were doing this shoot.

Lovely! I look forward to hearing more from you, my friend, and hope that you're having a terrific June.

      Tons of hugs,

    2. Green nail polish is my absolute favourite. I own way too many, but will still find room for a beautiful shade. :)

    3. I hear you there!!! Space is of a true premium in our little house, but thankfully bottles of polish are so small that I can always squeeze in room for one more. :)

Big hugs & happy end of spring wishes,

    1. Thank you very much, my dear! I'm rather fond of this necklace, too. It's a relatively recent acquisition (picked up a few months ago) and I've been tucking it away for just the right outfit. This was it in my eyes, so out it came to play. :)

Many thanks again & have a fabulous week!

  39. Well, I was thinking what an absolutely tiny waist you have and that belt shows it off perfectly. I really didn't notice any bunching. I think this is a fabulous outfit and I love the way you have pulled out the different colours. It really does look great. That green nail varnish is a spot on finishing touch!

    1. Thank you very much, my sweet friend - in reality, I know it was just me being my way too self-conscious usual (err...) self - especially since the "bunching" was more above my waistline in this garment or at least above the belt.

Aww, thanks! Little known fact, but green was my favourite nail polish colour in high school. I used to do ombre with three shades on a near weekly basis for a while (in grade nine). :)

Tons of hugs & happy Wednesday wishes,

    1. Thank you ever so sweetly, lovely Bonita. I love (underline that many times) the colours at work here, too. My mom has said numerous times that blues are my best colours and you know, I'm very inclined to agree with her, especially when they're turquoise/teal influenced shades like this.

Many thanks again & have a stellar weekend!

  41. Green nails?! They're amazing! I have this shimmery green China Glaze nail polish sitting on my vanity that I haven't been brave enough to try in a long time... time to whip it out, I think. You've inspired me <3

    1. Would you believe it, I adore nail polish and own my fair share (and have had plenty more in total over the years), but I've never yet had a chance to try China Glaze's offerings? How can that be? I don't know - I'll have to try and pick up a bottle or two finally this year. I'm delighted to know that I've helped inspire you and look to seeing your pretty green nails, if you share them on your blog, dear gal.

      Oodles of hugs,

  42. This is so cute and how wonderful that your nails coordinate! I'd love to get a patio dress {skirt blouse} set one day as well. But my goodness they are expensive.

    1. Thank you very much, sweet lady. I don't have a ton of outfits to wear green polish with (especially outside of the Christmas season), so when one comes up, I jump on it! :)

I actually just painted my nails teal this morning to go with the scarf I'm wearing today. It's a lot of fun to use nail polish like another accessory.

      Have a terrific Thursday!
