BOOK GIVEAWAY: Win a copy of I Love Those Earrings from Schiffer Publishing

For months, nay, years even before my 13th birthday, I knew exactly what I wanted as my gift when that milestone day finally arrived: to get my ears pierced. My parents wouldn't allow me to do so before then and I'd secretly dreamed for as long as I could recall of the right of passage that would be that big day. Naturally when my 13th birthday did finally arrive, I beelined it down to the local Claire's and got my ears pierced.

I beamed with joy looking in the mirror at the small pair of "sleeper" studs that the young woman at Claire's had shot through my lobes with that high pressure piercing gun. If the experience hurt, I didn't feel it at all. I was far too hopped up on excitement and joy. In quick succession over the next four years, I would get - and still have - three more holes in each ear. Making up, I'm the first to admit, in doing so for having to wait (unlike most of my friends and schoolmates) so long to get my first piercing and also because I've always adored the look of multiple holes in each ear.

Even with my pesky nickel allergy, I've been able to find and make some great, safe earrings over the years and wear a pretty pair in my lowest hole (the one I got on my 13th birthday) nearly every day of the year, very much including for the outfit shoots that we do here for my blog (simple studs usually call the other holes home).

Earrings are one of my favourite accessories ever and I adore that now my Etsy shop gives me the perfect place to sell those (vintage) ones that I come across, but know I can't safely wear myself due to the possible prescience of nickel in them. In general though, I've long been fascinated with this truly timeless accessory and was thrilled with my lovely friends over at Schiffer Publishing recently asked me if I'd like to do a giveaway for one of their marvelous books called (fittingly, I thought) I Love Those Earrings.

This expansive tomb is the most thorough work I've ever seen on the history, lore, social purposes, culture roles, and beauty of the humble earrings. Authors Jane Merrill and Chris Filstrup do a superb job of taking the reader through not only the history of earrings, but their own experiences with collecting these tiny works of jewelry, all the while highlighting their writing with scores of prints of famous works of art involving earrings, illustrations, and photographs.

This book traces the roots of earrings back to their earliest forms and continues that history right up to some of the best and most sought after modern designers. An engaging, eloquently written read that I couldn't put down, I Love Those Earrings is a must for any costume jewelry, vintage, antique, historical costume, or fine jewelry fan - especially since it's size (dimensionally, I mean) and hardcover make it an excellent choice for a coffee table book.

In addition to kindly sending me a copy to review, Schiffer has generously offered to send a copy of I Love Those Earrings to one lucky Chronically Vintage reader. This contest is open to readers worldwide and believe me, you'll want to enter - this is by far one of the most enjoyable, fascinating jewelry related books I've ever read and I can't imagine any fellow fellow of such not adoring this book as much as I did.

It's been a long, long time since I first got my ears pierced back on my 13th birthday, I still get excited each time I buy or create a new pair of earrings for myself and felt a similar thrill as I read, and found myself thoroughly captivating, by I Love Those Earrings from Schiffer Publishing.

And speaking of birthdays, today's just happens to be Tony's (we'll be celebrating it, much like mine last month, together once he gets back in September from working in the States this summer), so I thought that I would share in the festive spirit of such with all of you by starting this fun book giveaway today on August 6th.

Best of luck to everyone who enters this giveaway and many sincere thanks to Schiffer publishing for teaming up with my blog for another stellar book giveaway!

  1. I wasn't allowed until I was 11 and I felt exactly the same way as you did about it - indeed, even down to the adding two more pairs of holes alongside the first within the following few years, plus the odd extra here or there while I was at university (I currently have 9 total). Something else we have in common, my dear Jessica! xx

  2. I love this book idea! My current favorite pair of earrings is a small pair of silver birds in flight.

  3. Entry! Like you, I begged to get my ears pierced - my mom finally relented when I was 12 and she would have been 34 - we did it together! I'm pretty sure this was before Claire's, so it might have been a t-shirt shop!

My favourite earrings? Hard to say, but I'm wearing a copper set that my grandmother gave me in '85-ish that's from the 60s. I always feel close to her when I wear them.

  4. Oh, you never stop to amaze me.
Not only have you found an amazing book (who here does not love earrings and all earring-related things? I know I do) :)
Me, on the other hand.. I'm no surprise-person.
Lately, my "go to" pair are PEARLS (not the real ones, alas - I'm yet to come in contact with those majestic little gems). Nope, I use regular "pearl" earrings, but I do wary in sizes.. from those tiny ones that you can barely see with bare eyes, up to those marble-sized chunks.... says who I don't have variety?

    Many hugs

  12. Happy birthday to Tony! I love the idea of this I Love Those Earrings! I know that in some families or countries girls are only allowed to have piercings "later", but in my family and cultural background it happens one week after the girl is born - and I know that many see this as "primitive or cruel", but in my case, I thank so much for having piercings since one week of birth :) I was always very proud of showing my earrings ate any age! My first pair of earrings was a pearl one, that I still have, and then a gold one, and I also still have them. I honestly don't know which pair is my favorite, but probably some with topaz, though as I said, I am not sure! Loved reading about your piercings!

  13. My favorites are usually long. Pierced ears since high school (and that would be the early eighties), I to had multiple piercings, but only in one ear. Sporting only singles these days. Thanks for sharing.

  14. I drove my poor Mother demented going on about having my ears pierced and she finally relented. I was 7 when I had them done and was so very proud of my little gold sleepers!

  15. My favorite pair of earrings right now are my Mickey Mouse ones! I got my ears pierced when I was about 10 or 11. I too have multiple piercings ( 4 in one ear, 2 in the other), but usually only wear the one set. Thanks for sharing!!!!!!

  16. First off, happiest birthdays to Tony!! Secondly, when I read this I gasped because I also had dreams of ear piercing in my tween years! For me it was aged 11, and my parents and I were in Montreal visiting family there one summer. I begged Mom.. Dad was on the fence (a bit old fashioned), but he eventually gave way. Mom took me to a jewelry store where they pierced my lobes, and then to The Bay for my first pair of gold/pearl earring training studs (which I wore in between ear infections..!). Painfully, I suffered through the piercing infections for a few months until the lobes healed..then it was bliss afterward. I feel it's almost a right of passage for a young girl (At least it was in the 1980's when I grew up). Cheers to memories and good books and a wonderful day for you and your sweet husband. Erin xx

  19. I loved hearing about your ear piercing story! I, too, had my ears first pierced at a Claire's at the mall when I was a tween. But I fainted, so the rest of my story is hearsay from my mother! Apparently, just after I'd passed out and they were propping me up against the wall on the floor, the piercer's mother came in and said "Oh, no, you did it again!" to her daughter. Any future piercings I got, I made sure to warn the piercer that I might pass out and not to worry.

  20. I'm hoping to get my ears pierced again this year. At present I have just one hole in each lobe, but for a while now I've wanted to get multiple piercings in each ear, and possibly also a tregus piercing. I have a fascination with earrings and my collection is vast. It's so hard to choose a favourite pair, but I think the pair that is most precious to me is a set of amazing sapphire studs that belonged to my grandmother. They are so elegant and are perfect for dressing up any outfit.

  30. I bought my favorite pair of earrings over twenty years ago. My then-boyfriend worked at a used record store that had a display of handmade jewelry. I fell in love with the earrings and had to have them. They're very long - probably more than three inches. They jingle when I move like little Christmas bells. There's a stone in the middle that's greenish but I wear them with everything (I'm not a huge green fan and don't concern myself with matching anyway). I think my daughter has come to hate them in a way because she sees me wearing them all the time. I hope someday to have a granddaughter who loves them, too, and will wear them when I'm gone. Actually, maybe I should get some supplies and make lots more in different colors!

  37. I am a huge lover of earrings and have a LOT of different pairs to choose from. My favourite pair, hmm, it might be the silver mice pair my dad gave me as a little girl. I was allowed to get my ears pierced when I entered first class, and by then we had moved to the Isle of Moen where no one pierced with a gun. So we went to the doctor who pierced my ears the most extreme and painful way you can imagine, ouch! But I was tough and brave and got both ears pierced. In 7th class it became fashion having two piercings in one of your ears, which I wasn't allowed to do, but did anyway. ;) I thought it was silly to split a pair and a week after I got another second hole in my other ear. I also always wear a tiny matching stick in the second holes. I would love to win and read this book, it sounds very interesting. I cross my fingers. :)

  39. Since my DH and I reenact, @10 dif. time periods, my biggest decision every night when I lay out my clothes is what jewelry to wear! So many time periods....so little actual time to wear them all :-(.
I love the 40's and will suffer all day wearing fabulous, but painful, screw back earrings. I could alter them, but then they wouldn't be accurate. So... when you see someone with blue earlobes at a WWII event, it's probably me ;-). And yes, I have made outfits to go with an accessory - LOL!
