My passion for autumn's resplendent hues is scarcely the kind of secret that one keeps under lock and key. I wait with baited breath for my favourite season to return each year and then jump headfirst in spotting itss palette with gusto!

Summer cooled its heels early this year and we had the nippiest - relatively speaking - Labour Day weekend that I can remember in many years. Whereas most first weeks of September still see countless tourists and residents alike flocking to catch some rays and frolic in the waves at the local beaches, this time around, nary a soul was in the water - it was just too chilly to comfortably swim any longer.

Thankfully though, the weather did perk back up a bit as September progressed and bestowed upon us some deeply gorgeous Goldilocks days, as I like to call them. Those gloriously sunny, soft light filled, subtly warm and all too fleeting days as autumn not-so-subtly waltzes into town and usurps summer.

It was on just such a day that Tony and I captured this gently lit series of photos recently at Vaseux Lake, a modest sized body of water some 25 - 30 minutes south of our town. Though not as prized as a swimming hole as some of the other larger lakes around this part (such as Okanagan and Shaka), it is a breeding ground for local anglers - my husband very much included - who flock to its shores for some terrific local fishing.

We were neither there to swim nor cast our lines, but rather simply paused to enjoy the immense serenity and sweeping beauty of the pristine natural landscape and the near still-as-glass surface of the lake that afternoon.

I woke up in a mood to pair three of my all-time favourite colours, which just happen to be from fall's palette, together and did just that in this burgundy, pine green, and amber yellow hued 1940s inspired ensemble.

Though I wear this fabulous 1940s/50s dark green corduroy skirt often, I hadn't sported it here on my blog for close to 3.5 years, so I felt it was high time to give it a spin on camera again.

It as the starting point for my causal ensemble, which saw the edition of a breathtaking c. 1930s/40s burgundy felt hat hat I purchased earlier this year from the awesome Etsy shop that is Garb-Oh Vintage, along with a timelessly lovely floral print cotton shirt that I thrifted several months ago, a classic brown woven belt (also thrifted), a vintage appropriate oxblood/burgundy hued faux leather cross body bag, mid-century plastic jewelry in amber yellow, my go-to creamy white plastic rose stud earrings, and a pair of 1940s looking brown faux leather pumps that I've had for years, but which are still - knock wood - holding up fabulously well.

Now that Tony is home (not that I couldn't do such on my own, of course, but it is certainly easier with him there), I thought it would be fun to film a new YouTube video outside again, and did just that later in the day (up a hill near where my folks live here in town, not at Vaseux Lake), in this (relatively) quick breakdown of what went into styling my 1940s inspired early fall look.

Though I wasn't aiming for the much adored vintage lady explorer look her per se, I can't help but love that this ensemble has a faint hint of that vibe. I've been wearing this general silhouette - long vintage skirt, button front blouse, modest to wide brimmed vintage hat, and complimentary accessories - big time this summer and fall and really feel like it sums up my tastes in vintage casual fashion massively well at the moment.

As we head further into autumn, I'm sure that I'll keep sporting this silhouette and imagine that it will see me through winter, with tights and further layers added, too. It's comfortable, warm, classic and endlessly versatile - not mention pretty. What's not to adore?

With fall being my favourite time of the year and its palette my most beloved of all the seasons, you can bet this there will be many more autumnal hued ensembles coming down the pipeline in the very near future. I can hardly wait to share many of them with you and am equally excited to see all of the stellar fall looks that you'll be sharing on your blogs and social media.

Autumn may be fleeting, but its hues are eternal and well worth celebrating with our fashion choices while they're in their seasonal element!

    1. Thank you very much, dear Anna. The components of this outfit are quite straightforward and easy to replicate the general style of. I bet you could find similar pieces and rock a look like this wonderfully, too (if a 40s/50s skirt isn't forthcoming, there are tons of great 1970s and 80s ones that look quite similar; I have cotton versions in beige and blue from that era that are a snap to style in 40s/50s directions).

      Wishing you a beautiful week!

It's one of mine as well, especially because - as touched on in this post - I feel like it is a perfect representation of the kind of mid - tea length skirt + button front shirt/blouse + wider width belt + eye catching hat combo that I've rocking massively in the last few months.

Fingers crossed that the thrift store powers that be shine on you and send a blouse akin to this classic floral charmer your way as well.

  10. Thank you so much, sweet Dawn! It's awesome that you're a big fan of burgundy, too, and that it's a flattering hue for you. I could live in this colour all year round, but feel its pull most strongly usually in autumn, as some of the local leaves start to take on a similar shade. I'd been looking for a great mid-century burgundy hat for many years now and was thrilled to hit upon this gem a few months ago. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it showed up again here in a different outfit before the season was through. I've been living in it since September started! :)

    1. It's a very easy thing to do for sure! I own at least three pieces from that shop now and continue to visit frequently in case something else that I absolutely can't get by without appears there. It's hard to shop anywhere outside of Canada these days with the epicly weak Canadian dollar, but sometimes a certain something - like this vintage burgundy hat - will come along that I've been trying to find for ages now and one has to splurge even in the face of the atrociously bad (for us) exchange rate.

    1. Thank you very much across the board, sweet lady! Of all the seasonal palettes of the year, autumn's work best on me, so I utterly flock to these hues from the end of August to the start of December (because, let's face it, by then winter has usually more than begun here in Canada and pumpkin-y hues suddenly seem strangely out of place once more), while still weaving them into my looks, usually in smaller doses, here and there throughout the rest of the year.

It's awesome that you're a huge fan of fall as well. Three giant cheers for its return and all of the beauty, magic and fashion potential that this season holds in store!

  19. Great ensemble and such a beautiful setting! What a gorgeous spot! I really like the print of this blouse, such pretty colors (love that minty/sage green background) and flowers. I totally get the hint of lady adventurer you mentioned, something about the skirt I think, paired with boots it could be a very "early mountaineer" kinda look. As always I love how you have pulled colors from the print to finish off the look, the warm amber really finishes everything off :)

I'm still hunting for a pair of tall brown lace up mountaineering style boots that work for my hard to fit feet, but when I finally land them (oh what a glorious day that will be!!!), I will definitely have to try giving them a spin with this skirt. Thank you for the great suggestion!

    1. I hear you there, sweet CiCi. I utterly love green (it was even my official "colour of the year" in 2013, but agree that it is not the easiest hue to find, especially in a vintage/vintage appropriate context. It's a gorgeous one though and well worth hunting down, when possible. I find the 40s and early 50s to be a good period for original vintage pieces in this earthy colour, as well as some 80s garments/accessories, too - especially on the kelly, emerald, and olive/khaki green fronts.

Many thanks for your great comment - have a gorgeous start of October!

I tried to leave a lovely and elaborate comment, but internet has failed me, and it vanished into thin air. So, this is my second attempt.
Emulating autumn seem to be one of those things you're great at. The subtle, yet warm colors you've chosen, adorned by delicate accessories - two thumbs up for your choice!
I'm feeling a bit homesick right now (soon, I'll be back, but still..). I feel that I'm missing out on the best days of the year. Back home, at these days, the sun is still strong, yet not burning, the morning air is brisk and the smell of dew fills the lungs.. Yet, in here, the mornings are plain COLD, and since I'm working and rushing to hop on metro.. I don't get to enjoy that early walk I have while I stroll down the streets while being a proud pedestrian back home..

  35. P.S. I believe White Stag is a sportswear company. I'm not sure if they are still around, but I know that they were making ski pants back in the late 40s/early 50s.

    1. Thank you very much for your great info! I'm going to research the brand and see what else I can learn. Who knows, maybe it will inspire a future post on the history of White Stag.

      Have a beautiful week,

  36. Such pretty colors for autumn, you fit right in with the landscape! I'm so ready to start dressing for the season, but we're still having higher temperatures that would have me unpleasantly boiling if I did. :(

    1. Thank you very much, my sweet friend. It sounds like you're facing the opposite of what we ran into as summer wrapped up. I'd say that lately the weather has been in keeping with the seasonal norm, but it did get unusually nippy there for a bit. Hopefully you'll get a bit of autumn before winter starts. I've had years where there was very little true fall between the two and its always a strange feeling to essentially miss out on a whole season's weather like that.

Big hugs & happy October wishes,

  37. This is really a(nother) lovely outfit. I adore the green skirt and think it paired with the shirt is fabulous. I have a dark green skirt much like it (from Brittany's Vintage Under Thirty Etsy shop) and you have inspired me to pair it with a shirt and a belt. I have used it with a purple cardigan or sweater previously. Yesterday, I switched my wardrobe to winter, and stood and admired my 60,000 cardigans, haha. I think I have about every colour needed plus some extra. And I am knitting and knitting. I have a vacation alone this week, and have a really cosy time on my own knitting, sewing and reading. Today, DH took the day off with me and invited me to lunch, and we went for a beautiful and stormy walk in the nearby park, lovely. I hope autumn stays for long. lots of e-hugs from Denmark :)

    1. Oohhh, I love the idea of pairing a skirt in this rich, classic green with a purple cardigan or sweater. I'll have to give that a go, too. I'm seeing eggplant or plum working especially nicely with it. Thank you for the great idea and also for your splendidly nice comment, sweet Sanne.

How fun that you're getting some quality "me time" this week. That sounds heavenly!!!

Many hugs & joyful October wishes!

  38. Fabulous photos, that lake looks like such a beautiful spot. I very much like all the colours in this outfit, they look so lovely all together and the floral shirt is a really sweet piece.

    1. Thank you ever so much, my dear friend. I love this shirt, too. It's a great all-seasoner thanks to the classic floral pattern and range of colours at play in it.

I hope you're doing great and enjoying a fabulous October!

      Big hugs,
