Has the first nip of autumn graced your town yet or are you still in the last energetic throws of summer? We land in the latter camp, but it won't be long now until the two seasons collide, their palettes mingling, their temperates fluctuating, their respective garden offerings changing hands in a silent waltz that has gone on for countless centuries.

The brief, gorgeous, enticing period that hangs between summer and autumn is rarely more than a two or three weeks long, but what a special, exciting time of the year it is! Warm, but not blazingly so, crisp, but not icy. It smells of lingering sunscreen and the first plumes of chimney smoke alike. School returns to session, swimsuits and wool coats pass each other like ship's in the night, one coming into rotation, as the other is loving packed away until late next summer (or a much needed winter vacation). There are peaches and pumpkins, summertime pinks and rusty fall golds, bare legs one day, knit tight clad gams the next.

There is a vitality that feels nearly palpable to the finale days of summer, as sunflowers sway in the breeze, backpack clad youngsters scampering down the sidewalk in the crisp morning light, and one's natural instinct to rouse the oven from hibernation returns as suddenly as the ability to comfortably wear open toed shoes disappears.

Today's edition of Flickr Favourites captures some of the hues and imagery itself of this fleeting window, this changing of the season guards, this new year of sorts, nearly four months before the ball officially drops.

While I do wish summer would stick around for another decade or so, I'll admit to feeling a touch giddy already about autumn's return and each merry, magical, marvelous day that it promises. Today however, with the thermostat still closer to July than January, I'll stay squarely parked in summer's camp a little longer. It's warm and sunny, tranquil and invigorating at the same time here, plus, it lets me wear my beloved vintage sundresses a little longer.

Soon though, as quickly as a spider spins a web during the night, fall will be here and I will, I assure you, be singing its praises from the amber leaf strew rooftop - seasonal blog posts aplenty squarely in tow.

  1. Oh! I wish the good weather lasted longer.
It arrived in a storm and temperatures dropped quite a lot from one day to another. From 40 degrees Celsius the last week of August it went down to a mere 15 degrees Celsius the first day of September. Rain and grey skies came back.
As much as I love the good weather I cannot stand temperatures over 25 degrees Celsius. I suppose I got used so much to the Irish weather when living in Dublin that my genes completely forgot they are from Spain. I used to be more than happy with 30 or 35 degrees before and now 25 is the maximum I can stand. I also developed "sun intolerance" and have to use protection all the time, even with grey skies!
Even a small walk in the park is a killer for me without sun skin protection, I become completely red and my skin itches quite a lot.
Also we the decrease of sun light I become like a squirrel, I just want to sleep longer and stay cosy at home. Who wants to wake up early on Monday to go to work! Not me, that's for sure.
Thanks a million for the selection of beautiful and inspiring photos.
Have a wonderful second week of September and enjoy the change of season :-)
    A big hug from Luxembourg/Germany.

    1. Thank you very much for your in-depth, lovely comment, dear Eva. The temperatures have been plummeting unseasonably quickly here as of late, too. Usually the beaches are jam packed with sunbathing and swimming tourists still on the Labour Day weekend (the one we just had), but this year it was only 19C on Saturday and when Tony and I drove past the beach on Okanagan Lake, not a soul was - understandably! - in the water. Things might heat up again a bit, but baring an Indian summer, the true heat is gone again, I suspect.

I'm deeply sorry to hear about your severe sun intolerance and can just imagine how painful and irksome alike that must be for you, honey. I can imagine that living with such has made you all the more eager to see autumn and winter return each year.

So true! There is such a beautiful sense of coziness that accompanies the return of autumn. It is like Mother Nature is swaddling us up in her favourite knit blanket and letting us know that we're safe, warm, and loved.

Many hugs coming right back at you from Canada,
      ♥ Jessica

  2. I always love your Flickr collections, dear. This one is no exceptiong, you are so good at making moods, and since we are both lovers of autumn, this is a favourite. From the squirrel to the vintage ads. In Denmark some one hit the autumn button this weekend with lots of rain, wind and cold degress, but today with have beautiful sunshine, but with cold wind. Perfect autumn weather. XOXO :)

    1. Thank you very much, dear Sanne. Oohhh, that really sounds idyllic! Autumn has (very nearly) arrived surprisingly early this year. While I would have loved a couple of weeks of true summer weather to enjoy with Tony now that he's home again, I'll happily take some extra days of my favourite season in lieu of them, if that's what Mother Nature wants to dish out this time around.

Big hugs & joyful start of fall wishes!

  3. Definitely autumn here - full swing! But then, it's been this way for several weeks now... I'm trying to cram lots of outfit shoots in before its bitterly cold again - I'm starting to remember how uncomfortable they were last winter! I love the 1957 hair colours picture - I like to think my shade isn't too dissimilar from bottom right ;) xx

    1. Same here now that Tony is back. I do like to get in some winter shoots, especially when the ground is carpeted in beautiful white snow, but it can be frightfully cold, especially with the icy Canadian winter winds, so the more I can stockpile before (roughly) early to mid-November, the better! :)

Here's to the hope of a long, mild autumn on both our ends - and plenty of sunny days along the way!

      Big hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  4. Hello, dear Jessica! I know summer is a season that many want to last for decades :) but I am also glad fo fall! I think it is magical, the colors, the season, like reminding us that everything has a definite time and after that all blossoms again... I liked the pictures you posted - the lovely squirrel with acorn, the cards, so many things that speak "fall!" I loved the ad with the round table with the tea pot and pots, plus the nice dish, the way it was presented before... I even thought of having that way to a dinner or who knows, lunch, tea! I do love fall! Hope you have a very nice week! Hugs and kisses!

    1. That would be a splendid idea - including for a brunch as well. I'm really happy to know that so many elements of this early autumn post spoke to you, dear Denise. My love of fall cannot be contained and will be guide many a post (and YouTube video) in the coming weeks. :)

Big hugs & happy wishes for this second week of September,

  5. Oh! those 1957 hair colors are a dream.
Makes me want to chop of my hair and dive back into the 50s styles, oh the possibilities!

    1. Aren't they marvelous? Classic, chic, and totally on point for any vintage or modern fashionista alike. I think that any of those styles would look gorgeous on you, dear gal, should you ever give in to the temptation to shorten your locks.

Many hugs & happy second week of September wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

  6. The eyebrows on the hair color illustration models are the most exquisite mid-century eyebrows I've seen in a good while!

    1. Aren't they though? I did a rather similar, highly arched eyebrow for a few years (fifties adoring lass that I am), but gradually softened it to where it is now (about 2 - 2.5 years ago) and don't plan to climb higher again, so to speak, as I think a softer arch is more becoming on me.

Many thanks for your lovely comment, dear gal. Have a marvelous week!

  7. very good description of this favorite time of the year - it is as nature would stop a bit after the exiting of summer bevor venturing in fall and winter.
the last few days we got hit by a hefty storm followed by torrential rain - so now its so chilly in the nights that i have to heat the oven a bit! yesterday i was still wearing naked feet in open clogs but a wooly cardigan....
the joan beale postcard could be from the river valley here :-)
wish you the goldest autumn ever! <3<3<3

    1. That is a beautiful wish, dear Beate, thank you very much. It is returned in full to you as well! May this be a long, mellow, golden light kissed season of happiness, serenity, and a rich harvest (of all sorts) for both of us.

      Many hugs,

  8. Oh girl, your descriptions are just beyond wonderful. It's still hovering around the 95 (F) mark here in southernmost Alabama so I have awhile before the wind nips my nose. I am so ready though for the new beginning Fall seems to bring each year. Can't wait to see the Fall fashions you'll be sharing!!!

    1. Thank you so very much, lovely Suzanne - few things can set me waxing poetically more than the return of my favourite season. :)

  9. There was a cool breeze here today and my heart leapt with anticipation! May I just say that is one handsome looking duck? Such beautiful feathers! I am ready for the temperatures to drop a bit, I am no great fan of heat, warm with a cool breeze? yes. Hot with blinding sun, no. I'll be complaining about the monotony of snow soon enough, if only fall and spring were longer as the transitional seasons are my favorites!

    1. It really is a dapper duck, isn't it? We tend to have Mallards around these parts, which are gorgeous, too, but something about this beauty really jumped out at me - plus its colour palette is so seasonally appropriate. :)

Goodness, yes!!! Why must fall be so short lived in most places. I have had times where where barely had a month between summer's heat and winter's snow. If we're lucky, we'll get about two months in this part of country, but only time will tell. Hopefully it will be a decently long one for you this year, too, sweet gal.

      Big hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  10. What a great choice of images, the squirrel is my fave !
Its rainy or winter season for us. However its been summer since January. No rain, just sun. As good as it may sound we may not have water for electricity or drinking. Its getting pretty bad.

    1. Oh my word, I'm very sorry to hear about the terrible drought that your area is currently experiencing. What a stressful, awful thing to have to contend with. Tony was saying that there's one happening in California this summer, too, but I don't think things have gotten quite that dire there yet. My thoughts are with you - as are my hopes for a major downpour!

      Many hugs,

    1. Thank you very much, lovely Kate. We're definitely experiencing that very thing here at the moment. Last week was chillier and layers were a must, but now the weather has perked back up a bit and I've had short sleeves on all week. I don't mind. These days are so gorgeous, peaceful and fun. I wish they could last for months, instead of just a couple of weeks or so. I hope that you're having similarly lovely weather and that this fall with be a fantastic one for you from start to finish.

Tons of hugs & joyful weekend wishes,
      ♥ Jessica
