First and foremost I fully acknowledge that, yes, Squinty McSquinterton has returned again in full force and that she was accompanied by Weird Wind Face McGee this time around, too. Le sigh!!!

No matter though, this incredible 1950s style novelty print skirt had to be photographed while the temperature for single layered outfits was still accommodating and that trumped strong winds and harsh light. It could have been raining frogs on me that day and I would have still posted these photos! :)

For you see, in them I am wearing what is, really and truly, hands down my ultimate, dream, fantasy, holy grail of a novelty print skirt: one that entirely Canadian themed!!!

Ever since my teen years I have scoured countless shops online and off nearly obsessively for a vintage Canadian novelty print skirt from the 40s or 50s (assuming that such had even existed in the first place). I informed scores of vintage sellers I knew of my hunt and was willing to pay a premium to land such a skirt, but none was forthcoming.

A very dear online friend of mine, and fellow vintage novelty print lover, was aware of my search and had done her best to track one down for me as well (this lady has mad skills when it comes to sourcing elusive vintage items), but we both continued to come up empty handed.

Unlike myself, she is sewer - and a very talented one at that, may I add. Last year as incredible Christmas present, she knocked the socks clean off of me when she surprised me with the gift of the incredibly lovely, immensely mid-century vintage looking Canadian print novelty skirt that I am sporting in these photos.

Time was not on our side on the busy day when Tony and I quickly grabbed these shots up Carmi Mountain here in Penticton, so hence the harsh sunlight (aka, we couldn't shot earlier or later in the day, when it would have been kinder and more flattering), epic squinting and weird faces at work here, but again, I simply could not go any long without sharing this skirt with all of you. It is a dream come true for a proud, patriotic vintage loving canuck like myself and I simply had to shout about it from the highest rooftop - or in this case, Mountain peak! :)

I cannot begin to thank my treasured friend enough for the gift of this awesome Mountie on horseback, canoe, First Nations and Inuit, wood grain, evergreen tree, and dog sled print skirt. It is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, my favourite novelty print garment I've ever owned and I still have a hard time (months after receiving it) wrapping my head around the fact that it is actually, really and truly, mine.

From the bottom of my heart, sweet friend, thank you for giving this vintage Canadian gal her unicorn 1950s garment. There are no words to adequately describe how much I love it! Please don't let my windswept face fool you, I was smiling up a storm, both on with my actual lips and in my heart as I posed for these photos atop that beautiful hill and let the dry, dusty green landscape highlight the phenomenal-ness of your amazing gift.

  1. This is such an amazing gift! I'm so pleased for you :) I laughed out loud at the Squnity McSquinterson comment - I am about to post a batch of photos tomorrow where I was on the verge of airbrushing some eyes onto my face, it was that bad in every single one of the nearly 200 photos we took!! (I didn't, everyone on the internet will be relieved to know - I just tried to include more of the images where I'm not looking up!) I hadn't notice in your pictures though until you mentioned it (which is probably a lesson for me) - they'er so bright and fun and colourful and you look so awesome :) I often wear outfits similar to this one and they are up there among my favourites x

    1. I run into that all the time!!! I'm quite nearsighted and even though my glasses are strong enough for my current vision, I find like my eyes are often trying to focus (subconsciously) when I'm in direct light and that just ups the "squinty factor" all the more. I hear you on being tempted to Photoshop in some eyes! I don't have the skills to do that personally, but it would sure be handy sometimes if it could be done and still look totally natural. It's good to know I'm not the only one who has felt that way before! :)

Same here! I love outfits like this. A great skirt, fun top, stylish/cute accessories and plenty of punchy hues - always a winning combo in my books.

Tons of hugs & thanks for your great comment, dear gal!

  2. This skirt is to die for! Having been to Canada in my younger years, I somehow fell in love with the Mounties in their red coats. The fabric is certainly great, and getting such a skirt from a dear friend must be like Christmas, birthday and easter on a single day. I'm so happy you have this treasure! I also love the great place the pictures were token, no matter the sometimes merciless sunlight - you look great!

Best regards from sunny Switzerland, with autumn peeking round the corner, Doris

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Doris. I love that adore Canada and our emblematic, proud Mounties so much. I've always adored their traditional red coat uniforms as well. Few dress that way regularly in the 21st century, but on special occasions, we still get to see them gleaming in ruby red, which is awesome.

It truly was an incredible, thoughtful and meaningful present and one that I will cherish always. I sported this look for Canada Day this year, but without Tony here couldn't photograph it then. I'm sure it will come out to play again many times for future Canada Days as well, as it is by far the best suited garment for such in my closet now.

Tons of hugs & joyful (almost) autumn wishes,

    1. That's so sweet of you to say, dear Sylvie, thank you very much! I'm definitely a squinter, which stems in part from being nearsighted, but in general, even before I was, I tended to squint a lot in the sunlight. In hindsight, sunglasses would have been a smart move that day. Oh well, live and learn and squint some more! :D

These wide open spaces fill my heart with immense joy and are something I always feel a bit lost with if I'm living in a highly urban setting (like when were were in Toronto for six years). If I could clone it in fifty other colours, I would in a heartbeat. Thankfully black goes with just about everything, so if one can only have it in a single hue, that's a solid choice. :) I'll definitely have to try to find more tops of this nature to add to my wardrobe. They're perfect for spring, summer, and the very first days of fall.

    1. Hi lovely lady, thank you very much for your wonderfully nice comment/compliments and question. That bag, along with several of the same bag in different colours, was bought on eBay about 2 - 2.5 years ago now. A lucky random search one day for "faux leather cross body bags" brought me to this particular bag in a rainbow of hues being sold by a variety of (almost exclusively at the time) different Asian fashion sales on eBay. At the time they ran me about $12.00 US, but I've since seem some of the colours for even less than that in recent months. Here's a seller that still has the yellow one for just $8.18 USD: http://ebay.to/1i27yiI

We were both less than thrilled about the harshness of the light here (and in my more recent outfit post this week), but as I've said before, sometimes you just have to capture the moment (and outfit! :)) no matter what and that trumps great lighting or if you're squinting up a storm (which I am so prone to doing).

  41. Talk about a show stopper, make my heart skip a beat skirt! And what a sweet friend as well! Congrats on scoring what is undeniably the most Canadian skirt of all time. And you wear it oh so well!

    1. Thank you very much, darling Janey. I swear, I knew you would flip for this awesome skirt every bit as much as I did. It's such a cool, whimsical, beautiful piece and I really look forward to sporting it often in the years to come - especially for Canada Day on July 1st. :)

Big hugs & my sincerest of thanks for all of your marvelous blog comments today,
