Oohhh, how I've eagerly come to look forward to penning the Halloween edition of Flickr Favourites each year! There are so many marvelously festive images to be had on that huge communal photo (and illustration) sharing site and this year's crop of All Hallows Eve ones is amongst my favourites highlighted in this post to date.

Halloween is always incredibly special to me - and many others the world over, too - but when it falls on Saturday, as it does this year, I can't help but adore it even more, because I'm reminded of the unbridled fun of my youth, when a Saturday Halloween meant that you could spend every moment of the day from dawn to midnight focused on the big day night itself - and without having to think about school the next day to boot!

It's been a long, long time since I was last a student, but I still get every bit as giddy about Halloween. The classroom parties of yore are a distant memory, but not the celebrations I (we) host every October 31st at our house for loved ones.

Costumes, scrumptious foods complete with more sugar than you shake an autumn leaf covered stick at all, handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, watching festive movies (camping, not scary, for me, please and thank you!) very much including my all-time favourite Halloween flick, Disney's Hocus Pocus, and listing to festive music all in a house decorated in no shortage of seasonal accoutrements, are all still the same sorts of things as back when I was little and I know that these treasured elements of Halloween will never change for me.

They are to that day as presents, turkey, and Christmas carols are to December 25th, which - wow - come to think of it, is precisely two months away. Fabulous as that season is unto itself, I'm in no hurry to get there yet. At least not until November 1st, when the Halloween decorations come down the Christmas season plans and decorating start in earnest shortly thereafter.

Nope, right here, right now, it's all about the cobwebs and scarecrows, candy apples and merriment of this fabulously festive autumn celebration. These playfully eerie elements will always, no matter if I live to be a hundred years old, bring out the kid in me and make me delight, in much as the same way as I did when I was knee high to pumpkin, over the spooky fun that All Hallows Eve!

What are you looking forward to this Halloween, my sweet dears?

  1. What a enchanting set of pictures! They sure gave me that Halloween spirit chills, much needed these days! I'm looking forward to a possible project about vintage witches I have in mind. You know, if time will serve me well.

  2. Saturday Evening Post 1909 cover is awesome! I need to read more about Edwardian Era Halloween, I don't know much about the celebrations during then. Wouldn't be fun to find Halloween recipes for sweets and punch from that era?
We are almost there my friend! Five days and counting!

    1. That it is! :) Kitties and Halloween go hand-in-hand for me. They're such a cute, fun emblem of the season.

Big hugs & happy Halloween week wishes!

  4. That photo of the moon is actually getting me in the mood and I am not normally one for Halloween. Love that saying too, 'they fit like frost on a pumpkin'!

    1. Isn't that an elegant expression? I love playing spot the poetic wording in vintage ads, too. It's something that is sorely missing from so much modern advertising.

Wishing you guys a stellar Halloween week!

  5. Well, I am looking forward YOUR Halloween, dear Jess.
I'm sure that you will, in all your might, be able to convey the essence of the holiday with such strength, that it will be able to reach even the further parts of this planet - my place. :)

    Many late October hugs

  6. Hello Jessica, t
hanks to this selection of images. All very beautiful and charming, my favorite is the black kitten inside the pumpkin! By the way I love pumpkins! Yesterday I ate a salty pumpkin pie, and one of my favorite dishes are lasagna with pumpkin and macaroons! Going back to your post ... that those beautiful dolls goth, frighteningly funny and hold! (I'm trying to organize something special for Halloween!).

Vamp-kiss and see you soon ...

  7. Oh, how amazing would a book of vintage Halloween decorations be?! And also yet another thing I doubt would ever have been sold in the UK! I'm so so pleased I have a party to look forward to this year - I feel like I'm getting into the spirit much more knowing I can join in for once :D x

    1. Awesome!!! I'm doing the very same thing on this end, too, and wearing Halloween-y garb in the process, including a darling Casper the Friendly Ghost tee that I thrifted a few years ago. It's not vintage, but it has a charming old school look to it and pairs especially nicely, I find, with pencil and a-line skirts.

Big hugs & endlessly happy Halloween week wishes!

  9. Oh, I agree with you, Halloween is so magical, dear Jessica! I loved the Halloween cards here, or ads, like the hosiery and the fortune teller one - I held the mirror :) I dressed like a fortune teller some years, and a cat, a fairy, so on. Then I moved (countries) and in some Halloween was not celebrated. This year I am preparing a very small party, but just to keep the fun and magic alive! Hope yours is excellent, I am eager to see the costume this year!

    1. It's awesome that you're keeping the spirit of this, fittingly, most spirited of days alive at your house, dear Denise. I really applaud you for doing so and hope that you have a marvelous Halloween week and party (we're also having a small one, as per usual, for family at our house on Saturday).

Tons of hugs & spooky, happy Halloween wishes!

  10. Thank you for making this lovely Halloween collection. You know I always enjoy your FF, visual as I am. I thought the stocking that fits like frost on a pumpkin was a really fun and strange ad. The cat in the pumpkin was the cutest, and the old lab bottles so decorative, I wish I had some. Unfortunately, I am not home on Halloween's eve. We are invited to DH's godmother's birthday. I love her, but I am a bit sad that I am not at home to hand out Halloween candy, which has finally appeared in the shops. Have a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. It warms my heart that you enjoy my FF posts. I've always enjoyed putting them together, especially the holiday related ones.

Happiest birthday wishes to your husband's godmother. I hope that you guys have a great evening. I'm sorry that you won'e be home to hand out candy though. It's wonderful sign though that candy is starting to appear in shops in your country. That's awesome! Hopefully you'll be able to stay in and hand some out next year.

The temps are rapidly dropping here, though the afternoons have been mostly sunny, and I suspect Halloween night will be a very chilly one for the trick-or-treaters that come to our door this year.

Big hugs & happiest Halloween week wishes!

  11. I do like the cat in the pumpkin. It does amuse me how cats just like to get in everything and explore whatever you are doing. Do you have carved pumpkins as decorations? If do, do you do traditional faces or something more arty?

    1. Hi sweet Kate, I love carving pumpkins. I don't have much skill as an artist though, so traditional or simple designs with patterns are usually my go-to standard. In general, I love detailed designs though and am so in awe of people who turn pumpkins into masterpieces. Sometimes though, you just can't beat a classic grinning jack-o-lantern. :) What style is your fave?

Big hugs & happy Halloween Eve wishes!

    2. I really like traditional faces but like you I am always impressed with those who can produce works of pumpkin art. I saw a spiders web one and one with bats on this year which I thought looked really good. Hope you had a fabulous time on Halloween.

  12. I hate to think how many times I made my family watch 'Hocus Pocus' in the years after its release. Haven't seen it for a long time, but you've given me the urge to watch it again. Happy Halloween! With all your preparation, creativity and enthusiasm, you're sure to have a magical time. Samantha x
