My passion for, and frequent wearing, of red/black/white and/or grey is anything but a state secret. I've mentioned it here before, including in this vintage outfit post from last August and as we head into winter again - fall time weather being as good as a distant memory here in Canada at this point time - my mind is turning to it once again, as I wear this combo during the winter more than at any other point in the year.

While red is certainly one of my signature colours, and a beloved favourite, too, this particular colour combination excels, in my opinion, because of the sum of its parts. It is classic and bold, but rarely jarring. Elements of it match winter's tones, while the fiery red provides a dose of warmth and vibrancy that is so often devoid from this season - save for in our festive December decor.

The grey and/or white in the equation are as calm as the first delicate snowflakes that accompany the falling mercury and the black speaks to the fact that winter is the end of one year. Yet in its very darkness, the slumbering world of Mother Nature will be reborn as the season draws to an end and we usher in spring's return. That point though, especially considering that we're still technically in autumn, is a long way's off though.

First there are snowmen to make, holiday treats to whip up by the dozens, many a layer to bundle under, and the bleakness - and light - of this time of the year alike to celebrate and welcome into our lives For there is an undeniable beauty and elegance to winter that resides in the stillness, the haunting chill, and annual traditions aplenty that call winter home - not unlike that of the timeless marriage of red, black, white and grey itself.

Even if winter is far from your favourite season, I encourage you to embrace the hidden loveliness in it and to keep yourself warm, if only in spirit, but wearing sizzling colours, like red, orange or yellow, yourself this season as well. It will go a long way in helping to keep your spirits up until that distant day when spring really does roll back into town again!

*PS* Speaking of things to help fuel your spirits this season, have you heard about the fabulous Etsy shop giveaway that I'm holding on my dear friend CiCi's beautiful blog, CiCi Marie? 1. I'm with you on the red/black/white/grey combo. I've recently discovered a great fondness for ivory (which works better with my warm skin tone, and haven taken to wearing a black a-line dress with an ivory cardigan to work often. I pair it with my red rose earrings and a red lip for a pop of color. There's something so wintry about ivory and soft grey, I think.

    Lovely winter blessings!

    1. It's really interesting that you should mention ivory, because I was just wearing a few hits of it (along with pink, burgundy and black) today and was thinking in the process that I should sport it more often. I don't own a ton, but I'm going to try and give those pieces that I do have more time in the spotlight.

Thank you very much for your lovely comment and beautiful winter blessings. May an endless stream of them fill your cold weather days as well, sweet lady.

      Big hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  2. I really like seeing vintage ads that depict nails… maybe its for the shades or how long the nails are or even in what shape they have been filed. My grandmother insists on getting hers done like the ad.

    1. Same here!!! From the length to the hues to the very shapes of the nails themselves, they're firm favourites of mine as well (did you see my post back in 2013 on the history of Cutex nail polish? http://www.chronicallyvintage.com/2013/05/adventures-in-vintage-advertising-cutex.html). I adore that your grandma still does her nails like that. She'd be a huge hit in the vintage community! :)

Big hugs & many thanks for all of your fantastic blog comments this week,

  3. What a lovely poetical post! I'm definitely partial to red/gray combinations, myself, although on my pale complexion, red doesn't exactly flatter. I'm jealous of people who can pull it off, and stick to a lot of neutrals!

    1. Hi sweet lady, thank you very much for your lovely comment. I'm sorry that red isn't a huge you've had a lot of luck with. Have you played around with berry, garnet, burgundy and maroon hues? Sometimes they can be a lot more flattering on pale skin tones than stark truer shades of red.

Big hugs & happy weekend wishes,

  4. It 'also true winter has its beauty, is valuable because more difficult to find and appreciate, but there .. I think the winters of my childhood, open fires, my grandparents, a book to read with them. These days I would disappear from the world and spend some 'alone, a blanket and my two cats. But this is impossible ... so I prepare a hot tea and a slice of cake and go forward ...
We have also shared these colors, the hub of winter is red because it warms us, around these beautiful magical colors .. white, gray and black .. I will love you all!

    1. Ahh, those sorts of elegant memories warm the soul on the coldest of ice covered winter days, sweet Serena. Thank you very much for sharing them with me and taking me back to many pleasant ones spent at my grandparent's house as well (my paternal grandpa used to go beyond all out with his holiday lighting - which was fabulous - and my grandma would make the inside of the house look as lovely as Santa's own abode).

Big hugs & joyful winter holiday season wishes!

  8. Red and grey are some of my favourites too, as you already kow, dear. I love the expression on his face when seeing the bill, poor man. ;) We got snow yesterday! And lots of it. I had birthday guests, and it was so romantic. Now it is all melting, sigh. Have a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. Same here! The lifelike-ness of vintage illustrations is so much of their appeal for me.

Interestingly, Penticton got its first snowfall yesterday, but we were already in Van (we left on Sunday), so we missed seeing it in person (and there isn't snow here yet). No worries though, there will be plenty more to come in the next few months - that's a given in this country! :)

Big hugs & joyful start of winter wishes, my beautiful friend!

    1. You're very welcome, sweet dear. Huge thanks again for this exciting collaboration.

It definitely is cardigan and sweater weather here again, too. Though we don't have snow yet in Vancouver. My mom texted with photos to say (and show) that Penticton got its first fall of the season yesterday. Winter is officially underway! :)

Tons of hugs & happy last week of November wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

*PS* We ended up leaving for Vancouver on Sunday after all and the last three days before it were spent prepping, packing, doing laundry, cleaning (the house), getting things set up for the pets, and shopping, so I haven't had a chance to reply to your latest lovely email yet, but look forward to doing asap. ♥

    1. Aren't they though? One of my very favourite things about vintage ads is that so often their inspiration goes far beyond the main product that was being featured and branches out into fashion/style in general, as this super elegant example shows (I want her whole chic look so much!).

Big hugs & tons of happy last week of November wishes,

  12. I love the selection of pictures in this months Flickr favourites! I do love a combo of red white and black. It's something I rarely wear, but I do enjoy it. Lately I've been wearing a fair bit of red and black. It seems particularly glamorous and striking in the Australian Spring Time heat.
