{Tell me you can't practically hear this cute goat say, "All right, Mr. Cangiano, I'm ready for my close-up" :D}

♥

Over the years, I've mentioned here at least a time or two before that one of my favourite things to do in the Okanagan is to discover or simply visit (if they're already known to me/us) locations that, despite having lived in this part of the country on and off for much of my life, that I've never been to before.

One such place that we'd not yet visited, despite having driven past it many times over the years, is a small local and specialty food shop called the Log Barn 1912 located near the North Okanagan town of Armstrong. I try to hit Armstrong multiple times a year, primarily because they have one of the few actual vintage clothing stores (that also takes in modern items on consignment, but their vintage section thrives and has landed me some great finds over the years) in this whole region of the province.

We headed up that way recently and decided to stop at the Log Barn in the process, as Tony in particular had been itching to check it out for quite some time now. The Log Barn 1912's name taps into the rich history of the area and the farm land on which is reside. The shop itself was founded in 1995 and strives to provide the general public with a wide array of food created primarily by those in the Mennonite community across British Columbia.

Inside the fabulously quaint little store (that was very well heated the day we were there, despite it being quite chilly outside) one finds over 150 different products, some of which are (I believe) made on-site, including sandwiches, salt water taffy, jams, spreads, mustards, jerky, peanut brittle, cinnamon buns, and many other delicious specialties. Interspersed between the products, there's a beautiful vintage kitchen stove that is now a decorative piece, as well as friendly staff members handing out samples.

As charming as the inside of the Log Cabin is, it is the outdoor of the building and the surrounding property that draws visitors in like a month to a flame.

Situated all around the grounds, one finds a truly eclectic array of large scale outdoor decor and statues, including ones of both wild animals and dinosaurs alike.

As if that wasn't unique enough, there's also a good sized number of real live goats that live on the property and for which a specially constructed walkway has been designed so that the goats are quite literally overhead of you when you drive into the parking lot (you can even buy goat food pellets and hand feed them, if so desired).

Plus, there's also a long retired vintage blue pickup truck and sundry other delightful things stationed around the actual wooden log cabin building itself, all of which make for a terrific photo shoot location.

Tony and I were on a tight schedule the day we buzzed up to Armstrong and didn't have either of our DSLR cameras which us (as a shoot wasn’t planned in advance), but when we saw the blue truck up close in person, we knew that it - and the rest of the setting - complimented my outfit too marvelously not to take some photos on Tony's iPhone.

I was test driving the outfit that you see here for the first time that day (something I often do, especially if I'm wearing one or more of the pieces for the first time and want to get a good feel for how they look and fit on me) and had planned to wear it out again in the coming week for a shoot, but we were so pleased with this location, that so far we haven't taken any more photos of this exact ensemble.

The star of which is definitely the absolutely gorgeous, and very, very vintage looking, red plaid circle skirt that I kindly received as a review gift from the wonderful folks over at Vivien of Holloway (whom I want to sincerely thank for this downright fantastic garment).

Over the years I've found that many genuine vintage plaid skirts, especially pleated ones, can be very unflattering on me (pleated garments in general do not tend to do me any favours), so I only have a couple in my wardrobe at present and am always looking to add more that will work for me.

This classic, sophisticated circle skirt from Vivien of Holloway nails it there like no one's business! Free of pleats and boasting a very figure flattering round shape, this skirt teems with mid-century charm and style.

Well made from a good quality light-medium weight fabric, this particular skirt - called the Bottle Green Red Tartan Circle Skirt - is one of several different similar plaid/tartan/checkered skirts that VOH is currently offering. It retails for £49.00, which - especially for those in the UK and elsewhere in Europe - is a very fair price in my opinion for an excellent, old school style garment like this.

This is my first plaid/tartan circle skirt ever and I'm truly in love with it. From the length (28 - 29" inches long, depending on the size), which is my favourite range for all kinds of dresses and skirts, to the timeless Scottish inspired tartan in rich, intense shades of red, green, yellow and black, this is a skirt for the ages and one that I’m sure I will absolute live in over the years.

Knowing that we were headed to a shop that is so connected to rural and traditional products, I opted to partner my elegant new VOH plaid skirt with this cuter-than-cute honey bee hive brooch that I recently bought from Luxulite. I've always loved bee, hive, honeycomb and honey themed items, especially when they're adorable looking, so naturally I made a beeline (:D) for this darling pin.

The pin and skirt are bold pieces unto themselves, so I kept the rest of my look more subtle, opting for solid colours in shades of red, black and gold. As winter was still underway that day, I felt a classic black turtleneck would be a good way to help keep the chill at bay, while not having to reach for a million layers, that could have obscured the brooch and possibly even the skirt, too (I.e., a long princess coat).

This was a fun, super comfy outfit (I could sleep in this skirt, if I had to – it fits that well) and just the thing for a busy day of trekking up to this corner of the Okanagan, to visit a really cool location that we'd never stopped at before.

We both enjoyed our time at the Log Barn 1912, very much including posing near and photographing the uber cute goats, and agreed that we'd try to make a point to stop in there more often from now on when we're in that neck of the woods. Perhaps even with a DSLR in hand next time! :)

  2. What a fantastic location! I love the goat looking over the top of the overhead walkway, what a cheeky chap. Vivien of Holloway do make really beautiful garments, they're such good quality and at a very decent price for UK made clothing. I do love your beehive brooch, that's so adorable! xx

    1. They absolutely do make high quality, reasonably priced vintage style offerings. This is my second piece from them, but I'm sure it won't be my last. If the Canadian dollar wasn't so weak compared to the pound, I'm sure I'd already have several more! :)

Thank you very much for your wonderfully nice comment. I hope that you're having a terrific week!

  4. I love the goat posing behind you!! What a great location; I'm yet to incorporate farmyard animals into any of my photos, but I really should fix that ;) I love this simple, yet beautiful ensemble and how the skirt and brooch are the shining stars of it. I'm also really pleased to see a VoH skirt on someone around my own height - it's so helpful. This skirt is probably longer than I like to wear myself, which is what I always suspected with VoH stuff, but good to see it confirmed that I'd need to take it to a tailor, personally. Very important to consider before spending so much on an item of clothing, I think! xx

    1. Aside from a (now long shut down) petting zoo, I don't think I've posed with any other farm animals before myself either (though I did model with some crazy cute harbour seals when we were in Victoria, which was off-the-charts fun and memorable). I adore horses and would really like to get the chance to pose with some one day, if possible. Hopefully you can find some darling critters to do a shoot with, too.

Yay! I'm happy to know I could help you there (I just barely squeak in a 5'2"). This skirt would be a cinch to hem, if so desired. Circle skirts, I find, are usually really easy there. I love the length personally, but fully understand that midi (or almost ankle) lengths are not everyone's cup of tea and that on some petite gals, they can be unflattering.

I totally agree and wish that companies present a series of photos with different models of at least 2 - 3 heights (and sizes) to help customers get a better sense of how they might look on them. How a dress fits someone who is 5 feet tall and small framed, is obviously not how it's going to look on a leggy 5'10" woman with broad shoulders. It's great that we as bloggers can help to fill in there to a degree and hopefully assist others in buying items that will work well for them.

      Tons of hugs,

    1. Isn't it just wild? We have nothing else like that around these parts in the slightest. It's so cool, kooky and fun. I'm glad in a way that I'd (we'd) never stopped there before because it made exploring in person completely fresh and thus my smiles and happiness that day even more authentic to the experience - not, mind you that I ever fake such things, I don't, but still, there's nothing quite like the first time you explore a place.

I could see a skirt like this looking marvelous on you, dear Beate, including as part of some of your terrific outdoors ensembles. How lovely that you had a similar one when you were younger. I'd certainly enjoy seeing a photo, if you do come across one.

I love animals, their little personalities are hilarious at times. Your outfit is one heck of a stunner. The first photo actually took my breath away, you look so striking in it. You are one astonishing fashion inspiration. Thank you so much for your last comment to me, it brought tears to my eyes. 20. I love goats, they are so cute. When I was little we used to visit a goat farm where you could feed them and watch them being milked and then have that milk as ice cream! There were always baby angora goats which were so soft and they would sit on your knee and try to eat your ice cream. Lovely outfit, I have that skirt too but in the blue and red colour way, Mark bought me it for Christmas. I think they are gorgeous. Your Luxulite brooch looks fab on your simple black top.

Thank you very much for your wonderfully nice comment. I miss that, too, big time. Though perhaps not always to the same degree, I'm old enough to remember when people dressed up for day trips and even just to go to the mall when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s. We see so little of that today, especially outside of the fashion blogger realm and it is, to my mind, a genuine shame. There's so much fun, creativity and personal expression to be had in how we dress and I just don't get the "yoga pants everywhere" mentality for one moment.

Big hugs & happy weekend wishes,

    1. Thank you sweetly, darling gal! I really like how this on-the-fly shoot came together as well. The mix of novelty decor, goats, vintage, and snow dusted mountains is pretty spectacular, if I may say so myself. :)

Big hugs & happy weekend wishes,

  36. Great outfit! I love how in the fourth photo the goat is perfectly posed behind you (it probably thought you were posing with it). :)

    1. Some of them were really into what we were doing and one sensed that they're quite accustomed to being in front of the lens at this point. Too cute! :)

Many thanks, hugs & joyful weekend wishes!

    1. Yay! That's awesome to hear, sweet dear. I adored it, and the shoot, as well, and am seriously going to try and find more farmyard critters to pose with around these general parts from here on out (I've not yet done a shoot with horses, but would truly love to, as I know Tony would as well).

Sending oodles of hugs & happy start of spring wishes your way,
      ♥ Jessica

  38. You look absolutely stunning! I really love this outfit, the Luxulite brooch and the plaid skirt compliment each other so well. Also what a cool location! I hope to one day visit BC, I have only ever been to a small town on the border of Alberta but I'd love to go back to explore more of the West!

    1. Thank you so much, darling gal! I really, really hope that you're able to see more of BC. Without a spec of bias, I can honestly say that it's a stunning province. There's so much diversity and a wealth of fantastic places, big and small alike, to visit. We might not have the world's largest number of vintage stores here though, but there are even a handful of gems on that front and I'd be more than happy to tell you any that I know in the area(s) you're heading to, if you do make it out this way (and of course, if you're in the Okanagan, we simply must try to meet up!).

Tons of hugs & happy Easter wishes,

  39. What an utterly perfect location for an utterly perfect outfit! I wore red when I blogged about this skirt, but I *love* the gold belt and black top! Somewhere in my closet, I'm sure I've got a gold belt, and as winter seems quite reluctant to leave Chicago, I think I'll have to bring this skirt out once more before spring really hits.

    1. How fabulous that we're skirt twinsies! :) Gold belts are awesome. I wear this one often (ditto for a similar silver one that I have) and love that they're as good as neutrals, especially if they're made from leather or faux leather, which even in gold, tends to blend in quite nicely and not epicly jump out at you.

Thank you very much for your lovely comment, Emily. I hope that you're having a marvelous first week of spring!

  40. Wowza. Everything about these photos is so fantastic! I love the way that your polished ensemble jumps out from the mish-mash of eclectic items in the background, and the stunning mountains over your shoulder. It's perfect.

Also perfect? The colours in your outfit. The warm tones are wonderfully anchored by your black sweater and everything just comes together in a deliciously rich manner that is pleasing to the eye. I'm smitten with that tartan skirt and your brooch is just fantastic. I adored every one of these photos, and how wonderful that they were taken during an impromptu shoot!

    1. *Blush* What an awesomely lovely compliment, sweet Vanessa. This background really was a joy and a half to shoot with and I think it was bettered all the more by the grey-blue skies and the fact that there was still snow on the mountain tops. It all added up to an unforgettable location and shoot.

I hope that you're doing well and have a terrific tail end of March, my dear friend. We're taking things easy here this weekend after a very full, busy month.

      Tons of hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  41. Although I'm not a fan of iPhone photos, I think these photos are really good. Give Tony my compliments - again! :) I really like that it was not a planned shoot, this means you didn't dress up for it, this is really what you look like, and you look fantastic! What a fabulous skirt, so many lovely colours and so easy to match. You can use red, green, yellow, black, even white I think. It will be perfect for Christmas and all winter. I really want one, but alas, I have to save, since we have invested in my glass castle. Have a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. Thank you very much, dear Sanne. I will pass along your lovely compliments right away. As a general rule, I'm not big on using a cell to take outfit photos for my blog either (and can count on just one or two hands the number of times we've done so over the years), but every now and then a moment presents itself that's too fun/charming/perfect/what have you not to capture on any kind of camera that's to hand and this day was one of those for us.

Definitely! This skirt is so versatile and fun. I'm sure I'll get a ton of use out of it and won't be the least bit surprised it appears here again in the future (potentially with a dark yellow top - my second choice, actually, for the very day these snaps were taken).

Many hugs & happy tail end of March wishes,
      ♥ Jessica
