25 awesome red, white and blue-tiful vintage fashion finds for the 4th of July

It might seem strange to some that I, a born and bred Canadian, would have a deeply rooted passion for America's birthday, but that indeed I do! As I've discussed here in various posts over the years, America's culture is very much intertwined at times with ours and it is impossible, for me at least, to share a border with a country and not be aware of all of its holidays - especially when they're as monumental and important as the 4th of July.

We Canadians, typically a more subdued bunch who are prone to quiet celebrations and understated shows of patriotism, do go all out for our nation's own birthday, which falls on July 1st, but there's still something deeply appealing to me about how gung-ho Americans get regarding Independence Day. From parades to festive foods to epic fireworks shows, it's all so lively, festive and fun (not to mention a marvelous way to kick off the first full month of summer!).

I've never celebrated the 4th of July on American soil, but would very much welcome the chance to do so one day. Until then, I'll happily mark the occasion in spirit from this side of the 49th, as well as here on my blog. This time around, with a selection of 25 exciting, holiday perfect red, white and blue vintage items of clothing, jewelry and accessories.

Naturally, one does not have to be an American or observe the 4th of July to embrace these patriotically hued pieces - the colours of which jive with those used for the flags of numerous other countries around the world, too, including the UK, France, The Netherlands, Australia, Russia, Thailand, Norway, Chile and many more. They're lively and fun, suiting the bold, dynamic months of summer superbly, while also (especially the red pieces) transitioning beautifully into fall.

I hope that you have as much fun checking out these stylish vintage wearables - each of which stars at least one of America's national colours - as might be had at a huge 4th of July bash, with sparklers, star topped cupcakes, and miniature American flags as far as the eye can see!

    1. That sounds like such a special piece to have. I think that vintage and antique items that come down to us through our families are amongst, if not "the" most precious we can ever have the joy of owning.

Big hugs & happy 4th of July wishes to you, dear Laurie!

  3. All so beautiful, especially the gloves and bracelets, but the maxi skirt is gorgeous! I love maxi skirts! I know that it's worldwide spread, 4th of July, and there are huge parties and celebrations! The 1st of July is very important, I would like to know what you will do! As I studied at an American school, and later worked for one, I always celebrate the 4th of July! But later I moved to England and traditions like that and even Halloween were not so strong. Halloween has grown over the years, though :) Hugs and regards!

    1. Thank you for asking about Canada Day, sweet Denise. It is celebrate from coast-to-coast in many different ways, but some key elements that unite many of the festive happenings on Canada's birthday include barbeques (and/or picnics), the wearing of red, white and maple themed clothing and accessories, beautiful fireworks shows (July 1st houses, for example, one of only two fireworks displays that happen each year here in our little town), spending time outdoors (camping optional), and gathering for festive (usually free) public events in local parks and/or beaches.

It's really cool that you also enjoy celebrating the 4th of July, even though, like myself, you aren't an American.

Many hugs & joyful start of summer wishes,

  4. Of course red white and blue are Britain's colours too, I love this collection. My favourite is the Statue of Liberty brooch. It's a mini piece of vintage history and will look amazing on any outfit. So many lovely treasures here to lust after. Hope you are enjoying as good health as possible and wishing you much happiness xx

    1. There are indeed and as a huge lifelong anglophile, that endears these classic, vibrant colours to me all the more. It's splendid that both of those mighty nations share the same hues - and that Canada can say as much for two of them (red and white) as well.

Thank you sweetly, dear Emily. I really hope that you're doing positively this week, too, and that you're getting treated to far nicer weather than the rain that continues to grace us with its presence here more days than not (it's staggering just how many damp days we've had in the last two months).

Oodles of hugs & happy start of summer wishes,

    1. Same here! I think the vintage children's clothing is one of the cutest things on the face of the earth. I'm often tempted (but have't actually done so yet) to buy the occasional piece simply as the beautiful/adorable collectible that it is, even though I don't have any wee ones to dress in it.

I hope that all is well on your end and that you're having a great week, my sweet friend.

  10. Hello Jessica, I understand your enthusiasm for the independence of the July 4th holiday, an anniversary is known all over the world, have it so close to be exciting! think, even to the American base at Camp Darby July 4th celebrate with fireworks ... even if they are not as beautiful as those of my city, June 16! I believe that the atmosphere of the Luminara di San Ranieri might like, it's so charming that enchants, is by far the most magical night in Italy!
But we move on to serious matters ...
This selection of clothes and accessories is amazing: red is one of my favorite colors, and the blue is almost the opposite ... the red is fire, blue sky .. two elements that, if well balanced , they are like nature itself: perfect! I love this blue necklace, it's so light and elegant, very nice as long pleated skirt, as well as red earrings .. Everything really on topic, but it turns out your good taste and your personality!

It's marvelous that your town celebrates with festive fireworks in mid-June. I can just image how beautiful they must look as their flickering colours dance over your the age old buildings in your area.

Wishing you a sunny, splendid summer that is filled with many more wonderful celebrations!

  15. Some really fabulous jewellery picks here, that seed bead plaited necklace is quite something. I'm very keen on the beaded cardigan too, I don't have one in my wardrobe and that needs to be remedied I think! The little bird hair clips are just so cute!

    1. Thank you very much, my lovely friend. I seriously adore that plaited/woven seed bead necklace as well. It's a new edition to my shop and honestly one of my favourite necklaces I've ever listed there. The timeless design will ensure it works marvelously with a huge host of vintage and contemporary outfits, so I'd imagine that whoever snaps it up, will get a lot of use from it over the years.

I have a couple of beaded cardigans, but not many (in part because vintage, and some modern, ones are so often made from lamb's wool, which I'm allergic to), and would absolutely love to add more - including a vibrant red one like this - to my closet as well. Fingers crossed we're both able to do so.

Big hugs & nothing but the happiest wishes for a fabulous first weekend of summer!

I love the red cardigan (I am a cardigan addict, you know) and the white gloves with the small patriotic bows most. I adore the 4th July, since we don't have a national birthday celebration in Denmark. But we do share the same national colours (red and white), so we could unite on that. Have a lovely day, dear - and thanks again. :)

    1. You're so very welcome, my sweet friend. It's a splendid, super well priced offering and felt so perfectly at home here.

I'm very sorry to hear that you don't have a national birthday celebration in Denmark. Given what a storied and ancient nation you are, that's rather surprisingly. You'd think, at the very least, that a day could be designated to simply celebrate all that is awesome about your country and its history. I think that if I lived there, I'd be tempted try and start a campaign to have such established. Surely every nation needs its own special annual day!

You can join in the spirit, if you like, of celebrating Canada Day with me and my fellow Canadians later this week. There will be fireworks, barbeques, lots of desserts featuring maple leaf shapes, red and white attire, and cheer as far as the eye can see.

Many hugs & happy tail end of June wishes,
