August kicks off here in Canada with a much needed civic holiday long weekend, which is akin to a bank holiday in Europe. It's a welcome spot of respite in a season that is rather devoid of nationwide festive celebrations and though technically a little shy of such, marks in a lot of ways, the halfway point of the summer.
However, with the immense amount of rain we experienced from mid-April to late July here, it has really only been in the past few days (which have been somewhat drier, though still by no means devoid of rain) that it's felt like this season has quasi-sprung to life at long last.
This is cause for celebration for sure and I knew exactly what I wanted to wear, the moment we saw a sunny Saturday. I love plaid. Love, love, lovvvvvvve plaid. It is, hands down, one of my favourite prints ever and I sport it all throughout the year.
Its connections with camping and the great outdoors, things that we not only associate with summer itself, but which are inextricably linked to Canada itself, always make it a natural choice for me come the August long weekend.
No matter what the weather has been up to, the review pieces that I received earlier this year from UK vintage inspired/repro/pinup style clothing line Dolly & Dotty have been welcome and wonderful companions, as well as a great jumping off point for multiple outfits, this summer.
This is the third Dolly & Dotty piece that I've blogged so far (see the previous two here and here) and there will be one or two more outfits featuring others coming down the pipeline still this season, which I'm really looking forward.
Like all of the Dolly & Dotty pieces that I've tried so far, this dress - which is called the May Vintage Inspired Swing Dress - is very well made, especially at its highly reasonable price point.
It's constructed from a lightweight, comfortable cotton and is lined in a thin cotton fabric as well. Yet even with the lining, is a treat to wear during the warm weeks of summer, as the two fabrics are very breathable.
It's constructed from a lightweight, comfortable cotton and is lined in a thin cotton fabric as well. Yet even with the lining, is a treat to wear during the warm weeks of summer, as the two fabrics are very breathable.
This dress is sleeveless with wide, comfortable straps and boasts a becoming deep v-neck, which works well for a wide range of different figure types. The colours are crisp and the plaid, delightfully classic in its marriage of navy blue and red on a background of white.
This dress arrived, to my surprise and delight, with not one, but two different belts. One in the same fabric as the frock itself, the other the red one that you see.
Unfortunately the plaid belt is a little bit too big for me, even worn on the smallest hole, and the red one almost is as well, but I can wear it on the tiniest hole, so thankfully I was able to share it here with you today.
Much as with the previous Dolly & Dotty frock that I blogged about (in this recent post), I found the sizing to be on the smaller - but still easily wearable - side (do consider sizing up if you're ordering from D&D, especially if you're purchasing your first ever dress from them).
I really, really like this dress and want to sincerely thank the lovely team at Dolly & Dotty for sending it my way. It's a treat now for summer, but with some layering (likely including a camisole underneath), it could easily - and very prettily - work a treat for spring, fall, and even winter, too - the latter of which its colour palette would make for a perfect Christmastime look.
This time around, for mid-summer, I opted to pull on the navy and red hues for my shrug, jewelry, handbag, hat and shoe choices.
I teamed this dress with two fabulous mid-century style pieces from Etsy vintage inspired jewelry seller Summer Blue Jewelry (whose earrings are nickel-free, which means I can safely wear them - huzzah!!!). I'm a huge fan of Summer's creations and am gradually building my collection of such. She recent started putting out this year's fall and Halloween lines and I want every last item in them!
Plaid dresses are frequently vivacious and eye-catching unto themselves, so a solid coloured 1930s/40s red straw hat, a c. 1950s navy blue handbag, and a vintage appropriate pair of red pumps, as well as a mid-century pair of white gloves and a beautiful vintage white carnival glass beaded necklace round out this fun sunny weather look.
Often the marriage of navy, red and white telegraphs a nautical look, but I think that the black cherry hued 1940s style brooch helps to keep this ensemble more landlocked and tied back to the outdoors/camping associations that plaid is so connected to. Had I, however, sported a sailboat, anchor or ship's steering wheel shaped pin, I suspect this outfit would have looked a lot more ocean appropriate.
That wasn't what I was after that day however, as water wasn't factoring into the weekend's activities. Instead we married errand running with family visits and a bit of much needed R&R, and grabbed these snaps early on Saturday evening as the sun was starting to retreat behind the hills and the heat of the day had receded a touch.
I'm grateful to feel warmth again and really, really hope that the summertime weather sticks around now that it has - knock wood - returned for the time being. This coming weekend is Tony's birthday (on Saturday) and we're definitely crossing our fingers that it's a sunny one again, too.
It's awesome to be into the eighth month of the year and to know that, rain or no rain, there's still a fairly decent stretch left to go until Old Man Winter returns. Though I must say, I really do love the idea of sporting this frock during the Christmas season and could easily see myself partnering it with a red blazer or cardigan and some (perhaps navy blue) tights for a icy season look.
Not quite yet though, I want to do my best rock lounging lizard impression first and soak as much of the warmth, sunlight and carefree vibes of summer as I possibly can before we blink and we’re up to the brims of our vintage hats in snow once more.
What a sweet, fun, and perfectly summery look! I love the plaid - it's such a great look for the warm weather, like wearing a picnic blanket - and the coordinated red and blue accessories bring everything together, letting the fun print of the dress really sing. This is a lovely outfit to start out the last month of summer.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, my sweet friend. So true - and all the more reason to melt over plaid. I've always (massively) wanted to live in a beautiful log home in the woods. Such isn't likely to happen anytime soon, but at least I can sport plaid anytime I want and feel a bit closer to that dream happening (as I naturally equate plaid with log homes, that is :)).
DeleteMany hugs & joyful mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
Yep, that's pretty much the perfect summery dress! The plaid is such a spunky pattern, I absolutely love it!
ReplyDeleteAgreed so much. It's a great plaid - vibrant, but not glaringly so, classic and versatile. I'm very grateful to have this dress in my wardrobe now and look forward to enjoying it for a long time to come.
DeleteI hope that you guys are doing well and having a stellar summer.
xoxo ♥ Jessica
I love plaid fabrics, but it is so difficult to find clothes in this fantasy that as soon as I saw the first pictures of this post you my eyes sparkled! I find it lovely, and you're really good, you are beautiful my dear! I find absolutely right pairing with soft blue sweater and the brooch is really interesting!
ReplyDeleteYou're lucky in August allow you to wear a dress like this! Here in Tuscany it is so hot that wearing beach clothes, yesterday I have fled to the mountains and through the woods started to rain and it was beautiful Jessica, a summer rain all to myself! Now I say goodbye, I have to cook something for Marco! These beautiful photographs and all this green and fresh nature!
It's really interesting to hear you say that plaid garments are fairly hard to come by in Italy. I believe it though. Tony wasn't wild about plaid at first (when we first began dating, I mean) and still prefers small checks to larger ones for his own clothes, as he didn't grow up wearing much of it there. If you ever visit Canada, rest assured that you'll be able to find plaid far and wide on everything from clothes to throw pillows, home decor pieces to classic camping gear.
DeleteEnjoy your week, dear Serena. I hope that the heat mellows a bit for you. We're getting a lot of rain again here (to no one's surprise any longer), so I'm all the more happy to have nabbed these shots recently.
Big hugs coming your way,
♥ Jessica
You look a summer picture, Jessica! And red, white and blue is one of my favourite combinations all year round :) I'm off to familiarise myself with any new items on D&D's website - I keep forgetting to keep an eye on them! xx
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetly, darling gal. I'm really excited to see what D&D is going to release for the fall/winter months. I'm secretly hoping for well priced vintage style trousers, as I'd like to expand my collection of such in a way that doesn't break the bank (especially with our continually weak Cnd dollar). What might you like to see them release next?
DeleteOodles of hugs,
♥ Jessica
Beautiful dress ♥
ReplyDeleteCasa Cherry
Thank you sweetly, honey. It really is. From the v neck to the classic plaid in inviting shades of blue, red and white, I really love this dress and am grateful to have it in my closet now.
DeleteMany hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
My dear Jessica, you look positively radiant in your summery dress! I just love the plaid fabric and your little brooch is darling! You are the picture of sweet summer goodness :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the delightful visit to my blog this morning. Hugs to you!
What a splendidly lovely comment - and compliment, dear Stephanie. Thank you ever so much.
DeleteYou're sincerely welcome. I've been reading your blog for quite some time now and simply had to comment on your stunning summer tea party spread.
Many hugs & happy August wishes,
♥ Jessica
I love your entire outfit! It's so pretty! :D

That's super sweet of you to say, honey. Thank you so much!

Beautiful, ensemble, dress. You look lovely. Cheers, Ardith
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly, Ardith. I really appreciate your kind compliment.
DeleteHave a fantastic August,

This dress is simply perfect for summer!!! But I can totally see it being fall'ed up as well! I just love the hues chosen too!

Thank you sweetly, my dear friend. Same here - given that summer never really happened in any sort of continual way for us this year, I'm all the more eager for autumn's return and can hardly wait to give this dress a spin when it does.
DeleteMany hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
You're always so lovely! I agree- this doesn't look nautical at all!!! I need to check out this brand- I keep hearing about it! I'm glad it's finally summery and dry near you! XO

www.gracerock-kellyroll.com
Thank you sweetly, lovely Lauren. I really, really dig D&D offerings. Aside from the fact that they're cut (or, to be fair, the items I've tried so far are cut) on the smaller side, I love every aspect of their offerings and have worn each piece that I've shared here on my blog from them so far multiple times this summer (especially the green and white striped top from a few weeks ago). They're well made, comfy, classic, and quite reasonably priced (even with the conversion rate factored in). Highly recommended! :)
DeleteBig hugs coming your way,
♥ Jessica
Oh, what a lovely plaid dress! The bodice is incredibly flattering - so pretty! I have a similar plaid dress made of flannel that I wear in the autumn, but I love seeing this for summer! Hoping you get some more hot weather in the interior!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, dear Shelia. Agreed - I don't often show that much cleavage, but when I do, I want to feel "locked in" so to speak, but still comfortable. This dress delivers on that front big time and is ideal for those roasty-toasty days when one doesn't want the added warmth of a cami underneath.
DeleteMany hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
Dear Jessica,
ReplyDeleteThis is just an adorable red plaid dress, and you look equally adorable in it! I too absolutely LOVE plaid (and particularly love RED) and would, like you, say it is my favorite print. There is a feel of old-fashioned wholesomeness in plaid – it always makes me feel happy and, dare I say, rather sporting. Camping demands plaid. I just don’t feel like a true camper without it. I often think that you and I are kindred spirits, so many things we both deeply adore.
Your May-Vintage-Inspired-Swing-Dress would also be the perfect outfit for a 4th of July picnic, or any picnic for that matter – especially with a red straw hat and red pumps. I really like that it came with two belts (solid red or matching plaid). But you are right, it would look fresh and nautical with the blue sweater and an anchor pin.
I do hope that the weather cooperates and that Tony gets sunshine for his birthday :)
Thank you for your wonderful comments on my blog this morning. Your visits always warm my heart, you darling girl.
Love and hugs,
♥Hope
Hello sweet Hope, thank you very much for your splendidly nice comment. I really appreciate the time and thought that you put into the lovely comments that you leave here for me. They really do feel more like conversations and always brighten my day.
DeleteI'm delighted to report that we did have sunshine for much of Tony's birthday (and were even able to grab some outfit snaps, with will most likely be appearing here a little latter in month). Good thing, too, as it poured on and off next day and has continued to rain periodically since (such no longer surprises or catches us off guard any more - it's been about four months of unusually damp weather now, so we're old pros at it ;D).
You're truly welcome. Thank you again for yours and for the wonderful back and forths that we share.
Many hugs & joyful mid-summer wishes,
♥ Jessica
Hi!
DeleteJust wanted you to know that I always look back to comments just in case you have any replies; I would not want to miss out on one. Plus, it really is so sweet of you to take the time to write replies, although I don't expect them, and you are SO good about visiting friend's blogs and commenting. Sometimes I do wonder how you manage to do it all!
I am happy to know that Tony's birthday was a beautiful day :)
Hugs to you, dearest Jessica,
♥Hope
Hi lovely Hope, that is immensely kind + touching of you to both do and say. Thank you very much! It's really thoughtful of you to come back and read my replies, as well as for you to leave the bevy of beautiful comments that you do here for me. Each and every one of them is sincerely appreciated.
DeleteOodles of hugs & happy Tuesday wishes,

That's awesomely sweet of you to say, Laura dear. Thank you very, very much! I'm completely smitten with it myself, too. :)
DeleteOodles of hugs from the Okanagan,

That's a lovely outfit! I particularly like the blue glitter earrings and the blue shrug. I need to add more plaid to my wardrobe, particularly considering how popular it is among many of my fellow tomboys.
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly, honey. Plaid is awesome! It's one of my top five - if not top three - favourite patterns of all time. I just love its versatility and that it can be very feminine at times, too (think, for example, of a classic plaid skirt suit from the mid-twentieth century or a tartan print evening gown). I hope you're able to find some more piece in this great print that you just adore.
DeleteMany hugs,
♥ Jessica
Beautiful Jessica !
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of plaid too -and its totally magical to be able to travel in time through an outfit. For example this one in particular, the journey begins in the 30's up until the vintage inspired dress was made. Isn't it just great ?
That's a really beautiful way to look at vintage fashion, dear Lorena. I definitely adore that about dressing "from the past" and love that I'm able to pay homage to multiple decades through my wardrobe choice.
DeleteThank you for your stellar comment.
xoxo ♥ Jessica
The plaid, the classic colour combo, your sweet smile, and a big hat - *sigh*. Lovely lovely lovely.
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much, my dear friend. This hat is everything!!! I swear, it's all I can do not to wear it (or my wide brimmed green straw one from the same era) about once every second outfit - especially during the summer months. I really want to add more similar (coloured) straw hats from the 30s - 50s to my closet as time goes on. Navy and brown in particular (I have a black one, too, but it's a bit more formal and even wider, so I don't wear it quite as often usually).
DeleteScores of hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
That dress is darling! The plaid is perfect for transitioning into fall :)
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetly, dear gal. I completely agree and am eager to wear it during the chilly months, too. With a fair bit of layering, I could see it working in winter as well - especially around Christmas, when I always get in the biggest mode for plaid/tartan attire.
DeleteMany hugs,
♥ Jessica
I love that plaid, with a few alterations it would easily be a patriotic American outfit.
ReplyDeleteSarah
www.sewcharacteristicallyyou.com/blog
Definitely! Good call, my dear - and definitely something for me to keep in mind if I ever have the pleasure of experiencing a patriotically focused US holiday on American soil.
DeleteHave a beautiful week!
xoxo ♥ Jessica
Cute outfit, as always, and so summery looking!
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much, sweet Grace. It really is summery, I agree. I don't feel like I've had too many outfits that fit that bill yet this year, given all the rain we've had for the past four months. As such, I'm all the happier that this one was able to transpire.
DeleteBig hugs,
♥ Jessica
What a profoundly lovely outfit. Again and again, you prove to me that you deserve a TV show on "how to achieve mid-century style" (even if not all items are vintage).
ReplyDelete...and you have made me sing, with your last paragraph:
I'm gonna soak up the sun
Gonna tell everyone
To lighten up
I'm gonna tell 'em that
I've got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame
I'm looking up
I'm gonna soak up the sun
This is such a friendly song - makes my mood brighten up in an instant. :) Thank you for reminding me, now I'll "sing it in my mind" for the rest of the day - and that is not a bad thing.
Have a great and sunny August day.
My best to Tony & pets.
Marija
That song is the perfect choice to quote for mid-summer. It's as good as an anthem for the season and instantly whips me straight back to my youth (I was about 16 when it came out) each time I hear it.
DeleteThank you very, very much for your awesomely lovely comments, fun song share, and for being the kind, sweet dear that you always are.
Tons of hugs,
♥ Jessica
What a lovely striking dress, it could have come straight out of the fifties. The shape is stunning on you as well as the colour. The hat is something very special indeed. I'm sorry you have had so much rain, some of it has spread our way recently but it's been very warm still. I'm sorry I haven't commented for a while, I've just got over a bunch of side effects that still affect me from time to time after a contracting meningitis less than a year ago. I have been soothed by the lovely posts on here and the other blogs I follow. This post especially boosted my spirits when I saw your pretty smile, there is so much warmth there. Wishing you and Tony a wonderful weekend my dearest Jessica xx
ReplyDeleteYou're such a kind, lovely person, dear Emily. I have been thinking of you and wondering how this summer has been going for you. Please don't worry for the tiniest of moment. It's always a genuine pleasure to hear from you anytime. I'm terribly sorry that you're had to contend with the lingering effects of battling meningitis last year. I'm sure that's been a challenging, difficult thing to live with. It warms my heart to know that my posts have helped to lift your spirits. Reading that brought tears to my eyes.
DeleteI truly hope that as the days and weeks progress, you continue to feel as well as possible. Please know that I'm always here 24/7 if you need someone to talk to about absolutely anything on the health (or otherwise) front.
Tons of hugs gentle hugs & healing wishes,
♥ Jessica
YES! PERFECT!
ReplyDeletethis is a very pretty dress - and with you inside it is a stunner!!! wonderful ist your accessorizing with the red hat and all the cute little details!
maybe you can shorten the plaid belt behind the buckle?? this is what i do in such cases... having a plaid belt seems great to me - one can wear it on uni dresses or cardigans.......
i wish you a fabulous august my dear!!! much love! xxxxxxx
Thank you so much, my dear friend - not only for your sweeter-than-summertime-ice cream comment, but for your suggestion regarding the belt. I always wholeheartedly appreciate your seamstress knowledge and input.
DeleteMany hugs & joyful mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
Nice dress! Looks so fresh and summery!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, dear Liz. It really is - just the ticket for the rain sunny days (or even just hours) we've been getting here lately.
DeleteI hope that all is well on your end and that you're having a warm, wonderful season.
Big hugs,
♥ Jessica
Hi Jessica,
ReplyDeleteAs always you found the best way to combine this beautiful dress with cardigan, hat and matching shoes, gloves, brooch, etc...
I know you were told before, you have such a wonderful eye for colours combination!
About me, I´m fine, more quiet and relaxed although I haven´t begun to look for a job yet. I have family commitments (wedding in Spain in 9 days) and after that I´ll set my self for a job, (it´s a hard work to look for a job).
Apart from that, it has been raining here as well and temperatures are very mild. I hope summer will come back :-)
Have a great beginning of August!
Eva (from Luxembourg/Germany)
P.S.: about my flight to Canada, tomorrow I´ll be at the airport, I´ll try to find a last minute or something like that. If not, I´ll prepare everything while I´m in Spain. I´ll inform you about the progress.
You're such a dear, Eva, thank you so very much for each and every kind word and compliment that you shared with me on this fun summertime plaid outfit post.
DeleteI'm immensely happy (and relieved) to hear that you're feeling a bit better and are presently more relaxed. I hope that you have a splendid time at the wedding in Spain. It's been years since I last attended a wedding and I rather miss doing so (no one we know in the area - or even in Western Canada in general - seems to be tying the knot these days).
I know just how you feel. One day it's like August here, then April, then even like mid-autumn sometimes. We haven't had a proper, continual stretch of summertime weather yet (at least not my standards) at this point in the season, I doubt we will - but I won't give up for such all the same.
I really hope that all goes well with your travel plans and that you're able to find a great deal on a flight.
Huge hugs & happy mid-summer wishes,
♥ Jessica
Such a classic plaid dress by Dotty and Dolly, which by the way looks great on you! Once again your accessories are on point, especially your hat, gloves and brooch! xo
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesomely sweet compliment, dear Camilla. Thank you so much!
DeleteTons of hugs coming your way,
♥ Jessica
What a gorgeous dress (on an even more gorgeous lady)! You always style every last detail perfectly, Jessica, and this sweet outfit is no exception!
ReplyDeleteAlso lovely to see that lush, green background behind you - we have had the opposite summer here on the East Coast - dry and HOT! Everything is brown and crunchy. What do you say we swap weather for a week or two? ;-)
Aww, Nikki, you're such a kind person. Thank you very much for the fabulously lovely compliments. I adore that you notice the way I accessorize. Thank you, too, for doing so. I'm a firm believer that an outfit is often "made" by the accessories one chooses (or, conversely, opts to omit - which Coco Chanel would likely approve of :)) and truly delight in the act of adding fun finishing touches to pretty much every look that I wear.
DeleteYes, pretty please! That would be amazing! At this rate, I think we're going to morph into a jungle, instead of our usual arid desert landscape. If only such were possible, eh?
Many heartfelt thanks again. I hope that you're having a smashing August.
xoxo ♥ Jessica
Hi Jessica. Your choices of accessories really make this dress shine. I love the paired blues of your shrug and earrings and the red accents in your shoes and hat. I like plaid too but always feel it needs something plain to bring out the colors you want to highlight. Lovely photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, lovely lady. It's true that plaid, unlike, say, many florals or polka dot prints, can need a bit of a boast to help it really shine sometimes. Good point - and all the more reason to bust out the sparkly accessories when sporting it. :)
DeleteMany hugs & happy mid-summer wishes,
♥ Jessica
Red, white and blue AND plaid! Doesn't get much better than that. Very cute dress and that brooch is amazing! You are, without a doubt, the best accessorizer :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely, positively awesome compliment, Theresa. It truly means a lot to me. Thank you to moon and back!
DeleteTons of hugs,
♥ Jessica
I have always been a big fan of plaid prints and this print is definitely fabulous with the color scheme. There is just something so perfect about rust red and navy. Love how you paired this ensemble together.

Thank you sweetly, darling gal. I'm wild about that colour pairing, too. If I ever get my dream log house in the woods (that or a big Victorian home are my dream houses and I'd be ecstatic with either), I highly suspect that both will factor into my decor a fair bit.
DeleteMany hugs & happy mid-August wishes,

What a perfectly pretty outfit Jessica, and so "you". Make the most of any summer day you can grab hold of! Many hugs, Ann xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much, sweet Ann - on both counts. We're definitely trying to just that and almost feel like cats or lizards this summer, rushing to bask (and take snaps) in the sun when it does appear. :)
DeleteTons of hugs coming your way,
♥ Jessica
I loved the little snippet about how plaid was the perfect choice for your August civic holiday. I like to dress on theme and let different holidays and events inspire my wardrobe, so it was interesting to read your thought process in doing the same thing.
ReplyDeleteAs always, your outfit is so thoughtfully curated, with each piece adding another element of whimsy and loveliness to your look. I've been seeing these retro resin brooches on more and more vintage blogs. It's neat to see something so tiny making such a huge comeback. It's a sweet little accessory that packs plenty of personality!
<3 Liz
www.withwonderandwhimsy.com
Thank you very much, dear Liz. It's fantastic to connect with someone else who really enjoys dressing with a given holiday or other important occasion in mind, too. I the creativity possibility that such affords is boundless and can really help to keep one's outfits looking all the more fresh and exciting. This past weekend our town held its annual Peach Festival and I sported a peach theme outfit for it, which will be appearing here in the near future. Events like that aren't national holidays, but they're awesome reasons to don a themed outfit, too.
DeleteIt really is, I agree. The number of folks created vintage inspired resin, plastic, and wood inspired jewelry is growing a fair bit these days - a trend that I hope only continues.
Many heartfelt thanks again. I hope that you're having a stellar August.
xoxo ♥ Jessica
I particularly love the dress and the earrings, but the overall effect is, as always, a work of art! Samantha x
ReplyDeleteThat is a true compliment, dear Samantha - especially coming from a bona fide artist. Thank you very much for brightening my week with your sweet words.
DeleteMany hugs,
♥ Jessica
This outfit is incredible! You are such a lady and you look so beautiful! I love it!
ReplyDeleteHope you'll get some summer days in Canada.
Have a great day!
Much love,
Mona
That is so awesomely nice of you to say, honey. Thank you through and through!
DeleteI hope that we get some more, too. They seem to come in spurts and get chased by rain (or at least very overcast skies) that then linger for a few more days. Thankfully we did have sunshine on Saturday for Tony's birthday. That was a real treat - especially after mine was rainy the month before.
Thank you again & have a week that's every bit as lovely as you are,
♥ Jessica
Your dress is fabulous - perhaps one of my favourites from all your posts - and I love the way you have accessorised it. Kx
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome to hear, my dear. Thank you very much! I'm head-over-heels with this outfit, too - and all the more so given that there have been so few days, due to the weather, when I could have sported it so far this summer.
DeleteMany hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
That dress is just gorgeous! Love how your hair looks too! You can have our hot weather, very hot and humid lately. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, sweet Laurie - completely including for your compliment on my hair. As a full-time wig wearer (due to medical hair loss), kind comments pertaining to my locks truly mean a lot to me.
DeleteMany hugs coming your way,
♥ Jessica
How pretty! It looks so wonderful all put together. Plaid is definitely one of my favorites, too. It's funny, though, it almost always looks like a cold-weather outfit to me when I see plaids! I think your D&D dress would go great in summer or winter.
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetly, my dear. There's definitely a cold weather vibe to plaid in general, I agree. In particular, I associate it (and tartan) with Christmas and frequently sport these classic patterns around that time of the year (in fact, my Xmas Day outfit last year was a fun 1980s does 1940s burgundy plaid dress). It's cool (winter pun mildly intended :)) that you associate such with the nippier months as well.
DeleteBig hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
Such a wonderful outfit!
ReplyDeleteI really like the dresses from Dolly & Dotty. They are very beautiful and affordable. And this gorgeous summer dress suits you so very well - amazing!
Many hugs,
Sandra <3
Thank you so very much, honey. D&D really does dish up some awesome, budget-friendly offerings. I'm super excited to see what they'll be coming down the pipeline with for fall and winter this year.
DeleteOodles of hugs,
♥ Jessica
Beautiful, and the colour coordination is perfect :)
ReplyDeleteThat's fabulously sweet of you to say. Thank you so much!
DeleteHave a wonderful August,
♥ Jessica
This is such a totally stunning swoon worthy outfit. The makes me think of summer time picnics
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, my sweet friend. Agreed - I want to rush out and have a picnic just looking at this dress. Good thing there's still time left in the season to just that (weather permitting!).
DeleteMany hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
I love plaid too! It usually makes me think of autumn, but this dress just screams summer to me. It's so pretty !
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, darling gal! Plaid is very, very fall-ish in my books, too (especially when orange or dark yellow is involved). I think its collegiate connects factor in there a fair bit, especially for us in the vintage world.
DeleteOodles of hugs,
♥ Jessica
Oh, Jessica what a lovely way to wear plaid in the summer! :) I think of plaid for the Fall & Winter but you inspire me to wear plaid in the summertime.
ReplyDeleteLove the red hat...IMHO a red hat is a fabulous addition to an outfit and really tops it off like a cherry on top :) :)(pun intended LOL)
I agree with you-I feel that the summer is passing by too quickly. Hope you are enjoying a break from the rain!
Best wishes,
Dee
Thank you very much for your absolutely lovely comment and kind compliments, sweet Dee.
DeleteRed is a stellar colour and one that I think most people's wardrobes are well served by including. It has really become a signature colour of mine over the years and it's rare for me to go more than a few days without wearing it (nor for a month to pass without at least one outfit post including it).
Many thanks again & have a beautiful (hopefully not-too-speedy feeling) August,
♥ Jessica
What a beautiful outfit, the plaid dress is just devine! I must say you always look amazing in everything you wear and this is no exception!
ReplyDeleteI confess to having a real weakness for plaid myself, I'm currently trying to find just the right fabric to make myself a plaid circle skirt as I think it will be perfect for the fall! xx
Ooohh, what a fantastic project! Just this past winter, I acquired my first plaid circle skirt (from Vivien of Holloway) and it instantly morphed into one of my very favourite garments. It's amazing just how many outfits you can build around a great plaid skirt (or dress). I hope you're able to find the perfect fabric for your make, sweet dear.
DeleteMany hugs & thanks for your awesomely lovely compliments,
♥ Jessica
What a positively perfect plaid and you look exceptional in it! It seems to be getting so much harder to find things with a more cherry red tone instead of an orange-red this days, so I think that makes the dress all the better. (You accessorized it so well that the word "nautical" didn't even cross my mind until you mentioned it.)
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, sweet dear. That's a really good observation. There has been a trend towards orange reds lately, in both makeup and fashion (and even home decor, too). Nothing wrong with such shades, of course, but blue red tends to work better with my own colouring, so I tend to focus more on them (especially when it comes to lipstick).
DeleteMany thanks again & have a beautiful week,
xoxo ♥ Jessica
Happy sunny weekend for Tony's birthday! I hope you get to lounge around under clear blue skies and are kissed by a warm sun. I loved your beautiful blue floral print Dolly dress and accessories and this plaid one is also gorgeous. You create a whole picture of elegance, colour and long relaxed days. xx
ReplyDeleteHi sweet Elizabeth, I'm delighted to say that the sun did make a welcome appearance at Tony's b-day bash (but then promptly retreated the very next day).
DeleteThank you so very much for the immensely lovely compliments. You really have a way with kind, touching words.
Many hugs,
♥ Jessica
Love the plaid dress, Jessica! It doesn't look picnic-y at all (although there's nothing wrong with that look), you look fabulous. Indeed the maroon colour pulls the red, white and blue all together. Have a lovely weekend :)
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetly, my dear. I'm really smitten with this colour palette and could see it appearing again (with at least some different pieces) as the season continues to wind down and then straight onto through to fall (and perhaps even winter). Navy + deep, dark reds = major colour love in my books. :)
DeleteTons of hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
Such a great look! You have outdone yourself once again! And congratulations with Tony's birthday! I hope you have nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much, sweet Anthea. We had a fantastic weekend! One of the most enjoyable of the summer so far, I'd say - plus, the sun even came out on Saturday (though Sunday was mostly rainy and thunder-y), so there was even more cause for celebration. :)
DeleteOodles of hugs,
♥ Jessica
I love a bit of plaid myself too, it's so versatile and can be super kitschy and cute. I seem to see gingham around more often though so I've got a lot more of it in my wardrobe, but there's definitely some plaid in there too. Also I'm glad to hear you've finally been getting some warm weather! I just think nice warm, sunny days are something no one should be deprived of, and especially since it's actually summer for you - it shouldn't be raining all the time! Hope you've been well lovely xx
ReplyDeleteJessica - littlehenrylee.net
That's really sweet of you to say, honey. I agree. Everyone deserves to experience summer each year. I wouldn't say we've been 100% deprived of it, just that there has been a staggeringly disproportionate number of rainy and/or super overcast days compared to any other year I've ever lived here. Normally May - September is our driest season, so getting such a bevy of rain has been bizarre for sure. I hope that the universe hears your thoughtful wish and sends us some more drier days of the rest of the season.
DeleteMany thanks for your wonderfully nice comment,
♥ Jessica
The colour combination is fantastic and not nautical at all! Very elegant ensemble indeed!
ReplyDeleteAww, why thank you, my dear. I love (!!!) nautical fashion, but as I wasn't going for such here at all, it's great to know that I sidestepped it, even with so much red, white and blue going on. As I do adore it (nautical style) though, I have a couple of outfits in the works that will star such here again in the very near future. One simply has to get their nautical vibe on when the summer sun is out. :)
DeleteBig hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
Red, blue and white is such a great colour combination-and they are such good colours for you! And, plaid is always such a lovely, classic look.
ReplyDeleteI like that the dress came with two belts! Do you think that the plaid belt could be shortened? I have done that before, by taking the belt off of the buckle and cutting some of the excess length off at the buckle end of the fabric, before reattaching the belt to the buckle. Usually fabric belts, more than leather, are alterable- at least enough to make them wearable!

It was so cool, I agree - and a really neat touch for D&D to do. I don't think I've ever received a dress (vintage, repro, or modern) before with that. It makes perfect sense though and could even be a selling point for brands who offered it.
DeleteWhat an excellent suggestion for shortening the other. That could possibly be done with this one. I'll look into it and then access if my modest sewing skills felt comfortable tackling such. Thank you very much for putting forth that handy workaround for fabric belts that are too big. I really appreciate it, my talented friend.
Big hugs & happy mid-summer wishes,
♥ Jessica
That really is a lovely Summery dress. I love the classic red, white and blue combination, it always looks so fresh and zingy. xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetly, dear Vix. I agree completely. It's as timeless as they come and is a colour palette that works (albeit playing around with the tones a bit, as needed) on almost everyone, which I think has really helped contribute to its lasting appeal - and wide spread usage - over the years.
DeleteMany hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
What a charming dress, and I love you you use all three colours for your accesories. We also have bad weather here in Denmark, and have had for almost three weeks now, so we all long for some sunshine and summery weather before it is all over. In twenty years we have only have to sit inside two times when celebrating DH's and son's birthdays, and one of the times were this year, sigh. Two more days and I have a holiiiidaaaaayyyy!!! :D Have a lovely day, dear. :)
ReplyDeleteOh no, I'm really sorry to hear that things have been damp and nippy on your end lately, too. What is up with Mother Nature this year? It's just astonishing that we're into August and still have't had a proper stretch of warm, dry summertime weather yet here. There have been some nice days here and there, don't get me wrong, but nothing like the usual stunningly beautiful (and very dry!) weather that this area normally gets from May to September. Honestly, since summer never really hit full speed, I'm all the more excited for fall (which I know is your favourite season, too) to begin.
DeleteIt's awesome that you're off for your holidays starting this week. I hope that you have a fantastic, relaxing break from work, my dear friend.
Big hugs & many thanks for your wonderfully nice comment,
♥ Jessica
What a gorgeous dress! Another amazing outfit, you always look so well put together with your fabulous styling. That hat is gorgeous too, a perfect match with the dress! x
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic compliment, dear Kayla, Thank you very, very much. Isn't this hat just dreamy? I wish I could clone it in a whole rainbow of different colours.
DeleteOodles of hugs coming your way,
♥ Jessica
You look amazing! Best regards :)
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, sweet lady. That's super nice of you to say.
DeleteI hope that your summer is going well and that you're having a sunny, beautiful August.
Big hugs,
♥ Jessica
I am swooning over this outfit! You always look so fantastic and flawless! <3 Keeping my fingers the warmer weather keeps up for you!
ReplyDeleteThat is awesomely sweet of you to say, honey. Thank you very, very much!
Delete(I hope so as well - there's still five and a bit weeks to go before fall officially returns, so you just never know... :)).
Tons of hugs & sincere thanks for your lovely comments today,
♥ Jessica
Another home run style wise. I love the photos and of course I love plaid !
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetly, dear Ruby. Plaid is so awesome! It's one of my absolute favourite patterns ever.
DeleteSending hugs & happy mid-August wishes your way,
♥ Jessica
Goodness plaid is just the best! I love this incarnation in red, white, and blue and your styling here is perfect as always <3
ReplyDeleteIsn't it though? I'd honestly say that plaid/tartan is one of my top three favourite patterns. It is so awesomely versatile usually and has it involves multiple colours (as a general rule), it allows one to create numerous outfits based on the hues a given plaid contains - always something I enjoy in any garment or accessory.
DeleteBig hugs & many thanks for your lovely comment,
♥ Jessica
Great colours on you again Jessica, you really know what works and you stick to it! That dress is a lovely style on you, and I could see it working well for different seasons as you could layer underneath as well as on top. Good choice! xx
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, sweet Porcelina. Definitely! I'm eager to wear it with tights in the fall and perhaps even as part of a holiday season outfit (though likely not my Xmas Day one itself, as I wore a different plaid dress for December 25th last year - you never know though :)).
DeleteMany hugs & happy mid-August wishes,
♥ Jessica
Hi Jessica =D
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the dress. Reminds me of Scotland <3 You are perfect, beautiful photos <3
Have a nice week!
Muahs,
Nar*
Hi sweet Narcissa, thank you very much for your wonderfully lovely comment and compliment. Plaid and tartan definitely call to mind Scotland for me as well. I've never been to that country, but truly want to one day. It has a very strong pull on me.
DeleteMany hugs & joyful wishes for the second half of August,
♥ Jessica
Lovely outfit! I can see that this wonderful dress will be very versatile throughout the year. I do love plaid and it is lovely to see it taking centre stage here. I hope that you have had a few more sunny days!
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetly, my lovely friend. August was a bit damp at first, but has been drier for the most part since (knock wood). I almost have to laugh over that point though, as this week I'm out of commission due to a small medical procedure that I had on Monday and so am just watching the lovely sunshine (along with Stella) through the window now. Hopefully it will continue for the second half of August and into September, including while we're traveling to Edmonton.
DeleteWishing you a splendid week,
xoxo ♥ Jessica
Oh no! How frustrating to get the sunshine now. I hope that you are recovering well and feel better soon. And that the sunshine waits for you of course!
DeleteThat's so sweet and caring, Kate dear, thank you very much. Feeling a bit rough this weekend for sure, but I've definitely been through (much!) worse and should be on the rebound soon.
DeleteI hope that you're having a fun filled, sunny weekend (hard to believe this the second to last one of August).
Tons of hugs,
♥ Jessica
Stunningly beautiful outfit Jessica, your dress is so lovely! I have always wanted a red tartan dress myself xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, honey. This dress is such a charmer. I hope that you're able to find a great red tartan one that you adore, too.
DeleteOodles of hugs,
♥ Jessica
What a lovely dress! I also love how you accessorize your outfits, they are so well put together ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetly, dear Akram. I absolutely adore this dress! It's equal parts fun and elegant, and I really do think I'll be able to style it the whole year 'round. I quite looking forward to sandwiching it between tights and a blazer or thick sweater/cardigan in a few weeks time, once we're into fall again.
DeleteI hope that you're doing great and enjoying a sunny, fun filled August.
Tons of hugs coming your way,
♥ Jessica
Is NYX available in Canada? I swear by their Wonderstick lipliner (a flesh colored liner) to keep red lipstick from feathering/sliding around on my face, especially if you like to overdraw or change the outline of your lips!
ReplyDeleteHi there, thank you for your comment. Excitingly, in recent years, some of NYX offerings have started crossing over the border and landing on shelves here in Canada. I've tried a few, including some of their eye shadows, and have been thoroughly impressed with everything. I always use liner, be it clear/flesh toned or the same hue as my lip colour, with lipstick, too. The difference really is night and day, I agree.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend,
♥ Jessica
